"A unique look at the birth of Jesus."   —Georgia Family Magazine on The Lion Book of Five-Minute Christmas Stories

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
From the author of other collections such as Five-Minute Animal Stories and Five-Minute Christmas Stories comes this collection of traditional tales for bedtime listening. Each tale is designed to be read in only five minutes, making them the perfect length for sleepy ears. They include retellings of familiar tales such as "Stone Soup," "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Wind and the Sun," and "The Golden Goose," as well as the lesser known tales such as "The Shoemaker's Slippers," "The Greatest Pearl in the World," "The Three Bundles of Sticks," "The Giant's Footprints," "Green Leaves," and "Two Islands." Fun, whimsical full-color drawings accompany each tale. The retellings, while original, are a bit didactic and have, in my opinion, lost some of the charm of the originals. In "The Emperor's New Clothes," for example, instead of a child in the crowd pointing out that the emperor has no clothes, a servant girl saves the day by making the emperor a plum-colored robe. The whole idea of the foolishness of the royal advisors and adult townspeople and the wisdom of the little child is totally lost in this version. Still, as an introduction to the folk tale tradition it is an acceptable source. Reviewer: Pat Trattles
