Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
When first met, veterinarian Mac MacIntire is pinned beneath a 300-pound lioness who has her mouth clamped on his neck. Mac has just signed on with the Rockland Zoo in Massachusetts, primarily to administer a survival plan for the endangered red wolf, 8% of whose entire population is housed at Rockland. But when zookeeper Donald Stewart is killed, apparently by the wolves, the zoo's new director and his sinister financial officer seem surprisingly eager to put down the creatures. Stewart's death follows that of a receptionist who, bitten by a rare black mamba, is injected with anti-venom serum from the zoo's supply that proves to have been deliberately rendered ineffective. Mac begins to suspect that a human killer may be lurking, but before he can identify murderer and motives, he must avoid being trampled by a playful elephant, poisoned by funnel-web spiders and devoured by a tiger. In this first of a projected series, the likable vet reveals a tragedy from his past and begins a promising relationship with secretary Claire Burke. (May)
Library Journal
Veterinarian ``Mac'' MacIntire encounters murder after only two weeks at the Rockland Zoo. First a deadly mamba bites the receptionist, then endangered red wolves apparently kill the general manager. Mac has his doubts about these accidents, especially when an insensitive policeman orders the wolves destroyed if the vet cannot prove their innocence. Mac pulls through, after close encounters with poisonous spiders, excitable elephants, and hungry tigers. The authors know animals, but not much about writing a proposed series: the narrative is hasty, simplistic, and often bungled.
School Library Journal
YA-- Mac, the new veterinarian at the Rockland Zoo, survives harrowing experiences as he discovers who is murdering various zoo officials, sometimes through the grisly use of the animals. Although the plot is simple compared to the modern spy-murder thriller, Mac does find that the villain is not his prime suspect. Most of the characters are well drawn. The police detective seems pretty stupid, but he does show kindness and eventually follows through on the clues to assist in the finale. An elderly benefactress provides a bit of comic relief, balancing the serious motives of greed, embezzlement, and double cross. Topics related to zoo management--animal behavior, endangered species, volunteerism--provide realism and additional insight. These details will involve animal lovers who might otherwise not read a mystery.-- Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA
