Editorial Reviews

Booklist
...presents a potpourri of subjects...a diverse collection, which could prove especially useful for tracking down articles not indexed elsewhere...
Wilson Library Bulletin
Libraries that have the earlier two volumes know their value and should acquire the third without skipping a beat. Even public and academic libraries that lack those volumes can use this one independently and effectively.
American Reference Books Annual
This work succeeds in its attempt to provide access to that which represents the best in rock literature from 1984 to 1990.

Library Journal
This two-volume set comprises the third part of Hoffmann and Cooper's already impressive rock'n'roll bibliography (Literature of Rock, 1954-1978, LJ 7/81; Literature of Rock II, 1978-1983, LJ 9/15/86). Besides books and articles written between 1984 and 1990, they have included additional material supplementing the previous volumes. The authors aim for breadth and meaningful organization; though they also claim to evaluate the usefulness of the works cited, annotations are actually very sparse and rarely critical. Citations are arranged under broad subject headings (which fall chronologically in the text), and coverage is selective: The focus is on informative, authoritative publications possessed of nationwide distribution. Appendixes provide an alphabetical list of books cited, a core rock'n'roll discography, and a list of periodicals that cover popular music, and a comprehensive index provides clear access points for names and music styles. This thorough reference, useful to scholars and informed lay readers, is recommended for both specialized and general collections in public and academic libraries.-Rick Anderson, Contoocook, N.H.
Booknews
A selective, occasionally annotated listing of books, periodical articles, etc., concerned with rock music. It is arranged according to a historical outline of the genre, with additional relevant topics appended to the historical scheme. Top priority is given to informative, authoritative publications possessed of national distribution. Three appendices provide a list of books and monographs cited in the bibliography; a basic stock list of rock recordings; and a listing of periodicals, past and present, that include notable coverage of rock music.
