Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa P. Hill
It is always interesting to read books that can shed new light on a well known subject. This book offers additional interesting facts about Earth's crust. If a reader wants to learn specifically about Earth's outermost layer, the lithosphere, then this book provides intriguing notes. It is not a beginning book on the Earth's crust; this book expects the reader to have some basic understanding of geology. Yet to avoid being boring and repetitive, the author offers interesting comparisons and additional facts to draw a young reader's interest. This chapter book provides additional information that can be used for book reports or geography lessons. There are interesting pictures associated with the descriptive material. This book also offers a glossary and additional references.

Gr 6-9 - Exceptionally useful works. In Atmosphere, the makeup of our air and the nature of weather and climate are probed. Global warming and the greenhouse effect are also covered. Earth's Coreexplores the makeup of the universe, the origin of the planet and its moon, and the layers under Earth's surface. Lithosphereexplains the crust and how land is built and eroded, covering such subjects as plate tectonics, volcanoes, and geysers. Each of these complex topics is made understandable by the use of colorful photographs, graphs, charts, and other illustrations. Captions include new and useful information, and the sidebars and fact pages are helpful. For students who have some basic familiarity with these subjects, these are excellent resources for research material, science experiments, and science fairs.-Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY
