Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Why a second edition of this excellent guide to the iMAC? Because of the new version 9 operating system; older OS 8.5 ran older iMAC computers. Newer IMACs include a DVD player, iMovie video-editing software, and Sherlock 2 software (for finding things), as well as the new operating system. Organized into twenty-three chapters, the text is grouped into five categories: "Let's Start at the Very Beginning," "Things to Do With Your iMAC," "The Internet and the World Wide Web," "Other Things You Should Know," and "Problems and Solutions." Accessible, very well illustrated, and thoroughly useful. 2000, Peachpit Press, Inc., $17.99. Ages Adult. Reviewer: M. Henebry SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
Library Journal
Mac OS 8.5 is the latest operating system available and is a little more difficult to use than earlier versions thanks to myriad new features. Even if former Macintosh users don't have any problems, there will be lots of new users with PowerPCs, G3s, and iMacs clamoring for this book. Langer covers all the usuals: installation, using the new finder and file system, customization, networking, connecting to the Internet, and working with Windows data. Essential for all collections. Williams's classic (The Little Mac Book) likewise has been updated for the popular new iMac. Libraries frequented by students and home computer users might want to buy two and keep one on reserve.
Booknews
A reader-friendly and fun guide to the iMac for new users, covering introductory skills such as booting up and using the mouse as well as more advanced skills like creating a database or spreadsheet, building a Web site, playing a DVD movie, and using AirPort, the newest wireless technology for Internet access. The author has written several books on computing. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
