Overview

The long-awaited sequel to The Little Mermaid has spawned a brief but pleasant soundtrack, with vocals by the original Ariel and Sebastian the Crab (Jodi Benson and Samuel E. Wright). In Return to the Sea, Ariel the mermaid and her human hubby, Prince Eric, have a darling dark-haired daughter named Melody, who is just as keen to go on adventures as her daredevil mom was. In the Broadway-style opening track, "Down to the Sea," Ariel and Eric (Rob Paulsen) coo over their offspring, while Melody's already making plans for rebellious fun. "Tip and Dash" introduces Melody's new sidekicks: Max Casella and Stephen Furst are a comic twosome who describe themselves in the stylish tune as "Titanic Tip and Daring Dash, adventurers-slash-explorers." Melody herself (sung by the dulcet-voiced Tara Charendoff) gets a solo in one of those characteristic, soaring Disney ballads "For a Moment," in which she tries on an artificial fish tail (she was born with legs, apparently) and attempts to swim. Elsewhere on the album, Sebastian the Caribbean-accented crustacean takes center stage, tackling in his own inimitable patois such island-flavored favorites as "Iko Iko" and "Hot Hot Hot," along with the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine." All told, Return to the Sea is just beachy.

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Disney's The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea features singalong favorites from the home video sequel to The Little Mermaid, as well as sea-themed oldies. "Down to the Sea," "Tip & Dash," "For a Moment," and "Here on the Land And Sea" are among the original songs included on the soundtrack, and new versions of "Octopus' Garden" and "Hot, Hot, Hot" round out this charming collection. While it's not as inspired as the music to The Little Mermaid itself, Return to the Sea remains a worthwhile and enjoyable follow-up.
