Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The delight of this lift-the-flap book is the artist's rendering of the wily foxes. You can tell they are evildoers from their wicked little eyes, their long thrusting noses, and their mouths full of shark-like teeth. The familiar story pits one of these heartless foxes (a single father figure) against a family consisting of one little red hen, her lazy rooster husband, and a pampered pet mouse. The little red hen of the title does all the work for her family when the others refuse to help—"Then I'll do it myself," she says. Thus, when they are all captured and thrown into a sack by the bad-tempered fox, it is she who rescues them by cutting a hole in the bottom of the sack with her sewing scissors so they can escape while the fox enjoys a brief siesta. The pictures under the flaps help to move the story along; and, in the final picture young readers will have to think about the meaning of what they find when a door flap is lifted to reveal a bed full of little sleeping foxes! 2005, Child's Play, Ages 3 to 7.
