Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Young readers are introduced to the creature known as the Loch Ness Monster by recapping efforts to identify and document the phenomenon. It is part of the "XScience Series: Imagination Library," a series of books that introduce fascinating subjects through accurate, easy-to-understand text and stunning, full-color, full-page photographs. These books are designed to stimulate the imagination of all young readers and expand their understanding of the world around them. This one describes the beast of the Loch Ness (affectionately known as Nessie), legends of lake monsters, how the legend grew, the incidents of phony footprints and photographs, and efforts to find Nessie. This volume includes suggestions for additional reading, web sites, glossary and index. Photographs and drawings complement the book with explanations of each. These are good easy readers for almost anyone. 2002, Gareth Stevens Publishing/A World Almanac Education Group Company, Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 3-5-These small, tidy packages offer more than might be expected, given their length. Every page of text faces a full-page photograph or illustration, often in color, accompanied by an informative caption. Each volume sports bibliographic information sometimes lacking in larger treatments. The texts may be brief but the theories offered for each mystery, some evidence, and a sampling of the research that has been done are all put forth clearly. Although not as detailed as works for older readers that laboriously recount the experiences of alleged eyewitnesses to these mysteries, these books are surprisingly comprehensive presentations on endlessly intriguing topics. With their colorful and appealingly designed exteriors and interiors, they will find a warm welcome.-Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, NY Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
