Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Graphic Library Adventures in Science" series, this book explains an often overlooked part of our solar system—the millions of tons of rock and ice that orbit around and between the planets. Weakland covers human and asteroid interaction, asteroids and comets in history and mythology, and what we know about them (scientific studies). Unfortunately, the first chapter (and the title) personifies these rocks: "people aren't often alone. We gather in villages, towns and cities...That's not the case for comets or asteroids. They live lonely lives." While most readers will understand the poetic speak for what it is—a way of saying the rocks are alone—it is a gaff that could have been avoided. Other parts of the book explain how a comet gets and burns off its tails, what happens when asteroids fall to earth, and what humans will do if we detect a big asteroid coming our way. The graphic component of the book is good. Backmatter includes a glossary, index, and list of extra resources, including access to Capstones' FactHound website. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen

Meet the Author

Mark Weakland wears many hats. As an author, he's written books for teachers, including Super Core!: Turbocharging Your Basal Reading Program with More Reading, Writing, and Word Work, published by the International Reading Association. His book topics for children include sports, bacteria, comets, and poetry. Mark's also a reading specialist. He teaches kindergarten children, third graders, parents, and teachers. As a musician and songwriter, Mark sings, plays percussion, and strums the guitar. Many of his songs, including "I Sure Love Pancakes" and "The Dooflicky Machine," have won national awards and contests. Mark lives in Western Pennsylvania.

As a kid, Carlos Aón wanted to be an inventor and illustrator, and as an adult he believes both passions have merged into one career in some way. He likes to draw everything, mostly faces and scenery, and he also enjoys planning and looking for new technical challenges. Sometimes he enjoys adding little details to give life to an illustration (perhaps a new color palate or creating different tweaks without losing his identity as an illustrator). Carlos is an electronic technician and a graphic and web designer.
