The Lonesome Crowded West [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Blake Butler
Talk about original -- this band has something for just about everyone. They can do quiet, brooding acoustics like "Bankrupt on Selling," dark and pounding thrashers like "Cowboy Dan," funky jump-around emo like "Jesus Christ Was an Only Child" -- just about anything. Throughout the whole album is a white-trash feeling and a sort of down-to-earth analysis of the state of the world, without sounding pretentious. Give this album a listen and you can be sure that you will be singing the rambling, catchy, almost whiny vocals in no time. If you dig indie rock at its very best, go pick this album up.

you need this album if you want to say that you like Modest Mouse

This has to be the epitome of Modest Mouse both, in lyrics and in sound. Isaac is a lyrical genius. Every new Modest Mouse fan should really listen and dwell in the tracks of this album. It is a must have if you want to call yourself a fan. This album will allow you to really get to know the band's intentions.

    Pre-MTV Modest Mouse

I first heard this album in my roommate's car a few years ago and now whenever I hear this album all I can think of is her big curly blonde hair bobbing up and down as she danced in her seat. This album has a nice flow to it; you listen to it and you're into it and all of a sudden it's done and you're a bit startled. A good thing, I think. ALl of the songs work well and are great to listen to. Still, it would be nice to have a few more stand out tracks. Most of the music has a funky, groovy, sort of hurried vibe to it. The guitar work is amazing but you won't find any Hendrix-esque guitar solos... just rapid, frantic riffs that compel you to shake your hips, sway around a bit, but never break out and really "bust a move". Ultimately, my favorite track is Jesus Christ is an Only Child. A fabulously funny and witty look at religion with such a simple and groovy beat. This would make a great addition to any record collection.

    Cowboys Rule

Many people call this their best work, and in a sence, it is. The best songs, (exculding Dramamine found on Long Drive) are from here. This is the album that got them known. There is a dranged (sp?) cowboy feeling to it too, hence the title. A good buy.
