Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leigh Geiger
This title is from the "Super Sandcastle State Stories" series. These books weave a tale involving non-human characters who take readers on a journey through their state. During their travels they introduce educational facts about state history, geography, culture, and nature. Amusing color illustrations enhance the text; however, the story line in this book is very thin and will only appeal to the youngest readers. A star falls into Texas where he meets an armadillo and a mockingbird. They take the star across the state in search of a rodeo ‘star' to bring him back to his friends. The star learns instead to make friends in his new surroundings. Despite the lean tale, there are other features which will appeal to older students and could make this book a useful tool for basic research in the primary grades. The book includes a simple map of Texas that displays the path of the star and his friends. Each page includes a sidebar with a full color photograph and state facts tangentially related to the story. There is also a reference page with additional state facts, an entertaining comprehension quiz, a short glossary, and a list of suggested places to visit in Texas. There is even a chili recipe which is mild enough for most young palates. Reviewer: Leigh Geiger, Ph.D.
