“Denise Marshall grabs her story by the scruff of the neck and doesn’t let go till she’s finished her dark and breathless tale.”
Julie Bindel
"A mix of noir, literary and crime thriller, this book is compulsive reading, but you may find yourself scared to pick it up at night. Its unsavoury plot and characterisation.makes for a brilliant, highly addictive read. You will find yourself thinking about it in years to come, just when you least expect it."
Denise Marshall was born and raised in a dysfunctional home in Highbury, North London. She was exceptionally lucky to have parents who understood the power of books and was taught to read at the age of three. Unfortunately, she was not blessed with parents who understood the need to set boundaries and therefore no-one stopped her reading novels like ‘The Exorcist’ before she hit her teens. This early neglect has led to a passion for noir and a tendency towards night terrors.
Denise grew up in a world in which violence was commonplace and her life experiences have ensured she never forgets how fragile and vulnerable life can be. As a result she has worked for over 25 years in organisations dedicated to ending violence against women. In 2007 she was awarded an OBE for her charitable work with disadvantaged women. In 2010 she returned her OBE to the British Government in reaction to their cuts to women’s services. Denise accepts she can sometimes appear churlish but prefers to see herself as principled.
Denise is a Luddite who has been amazed by social media and its ability to reach out on a global scale. A convert to ‘Twitter’ she was delighted to have been blocked by Salman Rushdie as the result of calling him an ‘arse’ after an interview she heard on the BBC World Service. Denise’s only regret is that Mr. Rushdie will never see her tweets explaining why she was right. Denise has also been described on Twitter as a ‘Potty Mouth’ but she thinks this is a fair description and this is clearly reflected in her writing.
Writing fiction allows Denise to remain optimistic and ensures she doesn’t actually kill the bad guys. She writes for women but would be delighted if men read her work.
Denise has a marvellous home life but is worried that she has started to prefer dogs to humans.
