All Music Guide - Brian Olewnick
The 1991 expedition to Madagascar by Henry Kaiser and David Lindley to investigate its local music scene unearthed many a treasure for Western ears, but two of the most prized finds have to be the astounding guitarist D'Gary and the legendary singer Dama Mahaleo. Here they join forces for a session recorded in Louisiana aided by some local musicians as well as Kaiser. The songs range over the contemporary Madagascaran soundscape, from bittersweet and beautiful traditional tunes to somewhat saccharine pop songs. D'Gary, who didn't own his own guitar until given one by Kaiser and Lindley in 1991, possesses a wonderfully fleet, melodious style, derived at least in part from...

D'Gary, who didn't own his own guitar until given one by Kaiser and Lindley in 1991, possesses a wonderfully fleet, melodious style, derived at least in part from the tradition of native harp and lute playing, and his voice has a earnest, reedy quality. Dama Mahaleo is the real standout, however, with one of the richest voices the listener could ever hope to hear. His woody, deep-pitched tones are utterly beguiling. The English-speaking listener needn't worry about not understanding the lyrical content; one is perfectly content to sit in wonder at that glorious voice. When the material is at its best, as on the opening song, "Hiakatra Sa Hidina," or the striking "Tongava Re!," this recording ranks with the best of contemporary African music. But even when the song's essences don't quite live up to the talents of their performers, The Long Way Home is easily listenable and provides a fine introduction to the myriad wonders of Madagascaran music. Recommended.
