Barnes & Noble - Ted Panken
Diana Krall's trademark contralto is cool, intimate, and graceful, its contours perfectly suited to small ensembles -- particularly the trio with which she made her name during the '90s. On her previous date, the 1999 platinum-seller When I Look in Your Eyes, a program drawn from American Songbook repertoire both classic and obscure that spent 62 weeks at No. 1 on the jazz charts, Krall extended her scope, augmenting the trio and quartet format with a Johnny Mandel-arranged orchestra. With The Look of Love, her Brazilian-flavored follow-up, Krall and producer Tommy LiPuma pull out all the stops, roping in the arranger Claus Ogerman and two count 'em, two symphony orchestras, as well as guitar guests Dori Caymmi, John Pisano, and Romero Lubambo and percussion masters Paulinho da Costa and Luis Conte.Chief supporting musicians include such jazz greats as guitarist Russell Malone, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Peter Erskine. The sound is lush and restrained; the production values are decidedly pop, right down to the Bruce Weber photographs on the inner sleeve. Not unlike Shirley Horn, one of her primary stylistic models, Krall sings without affect, addressing the lyrics with smoldering clarity and intelligence, phrasing with just the right touch of hornlike elasticity. By this point, she's a phenomenon unto herself.
All Music Guide - Ken Dryden
Diana Krall has a good voice and plays decent piano, but this somewhat ridiculously packaged Verve CD seems like an obvious attempt to turn her into a pop icon, and sex symbol to boot. The bland arrangements by Claus Ogerman who conducts the London Symphony Orchestra or the Los Angeles Session Orchestra on each track border on easy listening, while Krall and her various supporting musicians, including John Pisano, Russell Malone, Christian McBride, and Peter Erskine among others, clearly seem stifled by their respective roles. There are plenty of strong compositions here, including standards like "I Remember You," "The Night We Called It a Day," and "I Get Along Without You Very Well," but the unimaginative and often syrupy charts take their toll on the performances. What is even sillier is the label's insistence on attempting to photograph the artist in various sultry poses, which she evidently wants to discourage by refusing to provide much of a smile the rumor is that she's not happy with this part of the business at all. If you are looking for unchallenging background music, this will fit the bill, but jazz fans are advised to check out Krall's earlier releases instead.

As an example of savvy music business, calibrated to achieve crossover appeal, The Look of Love is a clear success.

    anticipation!

I have her last 4 cd's and I saw her in concert and I never felt cheated. I know I won't be disappointed with her new cd. She sounds like Julie London (Cry Me A River) and plays like Nat Cole.

    redundant

unoriginal singing of standards. mood is lifted from Sinatra, the man to listen to if you want the REAL thing. Sinatra creates moods, sings with such originality, such sublime phrasing, such feeling, monotonous wannabees fade into oblivion. which Sinatra album? go look!

    Original Krall, Classic Interpretations

Thank God for the sonic oasis that is Diana Krall, who delivers subtle nuances of tonal impartations of the lyrical intent, while maintaining the soul of an authentic voice, with smokey shades of what I would like to perceive as Elvis Costello complements. This I will listen to when I want to be alone in private refection.-MARK

    Diana Krall Kolossal

I bought my first CD by Diana Krall, The Look of Love. And now I'm hooked on her muscial talent. Her improvisation is whimiscial and light. Her vocalizations are sultry and torchy. Her song selections are old standards. Diana Krall can do no wrong.

    Trippin' with Diana

Well, we just couldn't turn it off on our recent road trip -- What a wonderful album. Came home and purchased her video -- also quite a treat. The instrumentals were exquisite.

    Absolutely Fabulous

Diana is the return of the old time torch singer with a feel of jazz. One can never tire of her.

Good... but not as good as her last CD

Don't get me wrong - I think Diana Krall is spectacular. But she's at her best in an intimate setting - piano, guitar, bass and drums, with her voice mixed far forward. Simple, uncluttered arrangements allow her sultry voice and wonderful interpretive skills to take center stage. By contrast, the arrangements on this CD overwhelm and distract from her particular gifts, and she occasionally gets lost in the mix. I appreciate that she's stretching her talent and exploring different musical avenues... but I found myself wanting to hear more Diana, and less orchestration. For my money, her best CD is ''When I Look in Your Eyes,'' which employs subtle string arrangements that enhance, rather than detract from, the vocals and piano. ''All for You - A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio'' is a close second.

My first Krall CD -- but not my last!

I love this album (it's my first experience with her music)! I understand her die-hard fans' criticism of change in genre (think Harry Connick, Jr., and his albums ''She'' and ''Star Turtle''), but don't call her a commercial sellout; just enjoy the smooth bossa nova and smoky vocals. The fact that she is also the pianist is a plus! I look forward to purchasing her earlier CDs -- the reviews I've read have prepared me for the difference between ''Look'' and her earlier stuff, but if her other works are stronger, jazzier and heavier on piano, how could I be disappointed? And to those who have criticized: oftentimes it takes a mainstream album to entice consumers into listening to / purchasing other works. ''The Look of Love'' is great!

The Best CD I've purchase in a long time.

I'm embarrassed to admit this but the thing that first attracted me to this CD was the cover art. Hoever, I listened to a few of the cuts while in the store and was blown away. The sound reminded me of the cool stylings of a bygone era. When I listen it's like being in a smokey club while an intimate combo plays for you and your lady. ''The Look of Love'' is one of my favorite songs of all time. When Miss Krall sings it it is fresh and lively.

    I love this cd!

I just love this cd! The title track is one of my favorite songs of all time! I remembered when Nancy Wilson and Anita Baker sang this song. They were good but this one even beats their renditions. This is one of the best cds of 2001.

    Unbelievable!!!

I have every one of Ms. Krall's CD's and this by far is the finest composition I have ever heard in a very long time. Producing and engineering of Ms. Krall's Look of Love CD is tops. Mr. Al Schmitt excels his talent by mixing Ms. Krall and the music. The CD actually takes you on a very far away journey to a sensual tropical Black Tie evening. Ms. Krall and Mr. Schmitt...you have another Grammy winner here! Congratulations!
