All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Appropriately enough for the film adaptation of one fantasy literature's most enduring favorites, Howard Shore's score for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings is traditional and majestic, using sweeping strings, brass, and choral sections to create moments of fire-and-brimstone menace as well heroic triumph. An ominous, bombastic feel runs through much of the score, particularly on pieces like "A Journey in the Dark," "Flight to the Ford," and "A Knife in the Dark," but Shore also includes respites such as the sweetly elfin, Celtic-tinged "Concerning Hobbits" and the stately "Many Meetings." The vibrant "Bridge of Khazad Dum" and "Amon Hen" combine the score's major themes...

The vibrant "Bridge of Khazad Dum" and "Amon Hen" combine the score's major themes into dazzling climaxes, while Enya's contributions, "Council of Elrond" and "May It Be," add a subtle serenity that gives the score balance. While it's not a particularly melodic score, Lord of the Rings nevertheless does an excellent job of conveying the film's moods through music and has more than enough presence to be appreciated outside of the film's context. [Fashioned in the style of the faux-leather-bound books that housed the lauded trilogy's "Special Edition" DVD releases, 2005's Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring -- The Complete Recordings gathers every bit of composer Howard Shore's Oscar-winning score for the first film and spreads it over three discs (a fourth CD/DVD presents the work in 5.1 Surround Sound).]

    A Religious Experience

I had always wanted to be able to listen to the complete score of the film and I was suprised to find that I could! I don't know how this collection managed to slip by me. I'm a great fan of the movies, a so-so fan of the books, but I absolutely LOVE the music. My LOTR CDs are probably the most-listened to discs in my collection. I used to listen to the soundtracks and imagine the scenes from the movie. Now I listen to them while I write. This collection truly is a great buy for any fan of the film's music and any fan of orchestral music. The songs are stirring and have a character and life of their own. The packaging is great and matches the extended versions of the films, and the DVD audio disc is bloody brilliant. Favorite addition in this version: 'Flaming Red Hair', the song that played during Bilbo's birthday party.

    Absolutely beautiful!

Having the complete recordng takes you back to the movie and letting your mind travel to middle earth. It is tremendously enjoable, I listen to it often.

Another Vote for "Well Worth Your Money!"

The reviews on this page piqued my already-fervent interest in this collection. I haven't made it through the first disk completely since I've been skipping around, much to my enjoyment! My favorites are: 'The Passing of the Elves' & the end of 'Khazad-Dûm', featuring the elegy for Gandalf. Both are beautiful, but Khazad-dum's ending sequence can bring tears to your eyes and reminded me of the poignancy of the character's death in the novel and in the film. This set is a huge treat for film & soundtrack fans, comparable to the Star Wars soundtracks in depth, vision, and emotional appeal. Carry on, Howard Shore! Let us hope for a like edition for The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

    This is worth the money!

For any fan of Howard Shore, the Lord of the Rings, or modern classical music, this is THE collection to get! For extreme fans of the movie, you can almost hear the characters' lines ... and you get to hear complete songs (like Gandalf singing the entire "The Road Goes Ever On and On" song, and Bilbo singing). I hope they release the TT and the ROTK full CD versions too!

    Amazing Liner Notes

This is the most comprehensive collection of music for The Fellowship of the Ring released to date. It also comes with an incredible set of liner notes by author Doug Adams. The music is beautiful, and the liner notes make it an absolute must have for any fan of the story.
