Overview

This book is about the Lost Art of Followership. To enhance your career, you must first master The Lost Art of Followership. This book reveals all the small and simple things you can do to become absolutely essential to any Leader.

From the battlefield, to the board room, to the White House, good Leaders are in high demand in every corner of America. And, behind every good Leader you’ll find a team of dedicated, loyal and committed Followers that ultimately determine how successful their Leader will become.

Before becoming a good Leader, or to become a more valued Team Player, you must master The Lost Art of Followership. Along the road to becoming a Leader, you must pave the way, brick by brick, by becoming a worthy Follower. While it is true that to become a good Leader you need to have learned somewhere along the way how to be a good Follower. However, to be a good Follower, you don’t have to be a good Leader.

Over the past five decades, I have been privileged to work with some of America’s most exceptional men and women who were TRUE Leaders and exceptional Followers. It is their good example that I write about, certainly not our own.
What you’ll find in this book is what I learned about Followership over the past 50+ years in both the US Military (as a US Army Officer) and in Corporate America (as an Executive Coach).

I learned that to become absolutely essential to any Leader, you must be perceived as someone who is effective, efficient, and consistent and has a track record of consistently producing excellent results. I wanted to be like them because they got it. They knew what mattered most - how to treat people with dignity, respect and kindness.

In this book, you’ll learn;

The definitions and key components of Followership and Leadership
How your Leader determines what is most important
How your Leader determines his focus and priorities
What Leaders really like and dislike

Additionally, you’ll learn how to become more of an asset to your Leader by,

Writing to Convince
Speaking to Influence
Eliminating Surprises
Becoming more Proactive
Sharpening your sense of Personal Responsibility
Becoming more Effective, Efficient and Consistent

I wrote this book to further the cause of teaching good Leadership and Followership, to pay tribute to the great men and women I willing followed, and to help you achieve your true career potential.

This book is unique for several reasons. First, it offers real world solutions to the problems you will face every day. Second, the practical tools found here are those you can easily learn today and actually use tomorrow. Third, you will learn how to become a more productive and valuable team player, contributing fully to any organization, whether in your company, agency, church, team or family.

In 2011, I was inspired to write THE EFFECTIVE LEADER’S GUIDE series of books because I wanted to pass on what I learned from those with whom I had the privilege of serving, many of whom are not here today to tell their story. So, before their lessons are lost forever, I have dedicated whatever time I have left to sharing what I learned. Thanks to them, I have collected thousands of small and simple things that employer’s (Leaders) expect you to know about effectiveness, efficiency and consistency and consistently producing excellent results. Unfortunately, these things are not taught anywhere.

This is why I created this series as an instructional text or primer for new Leaders and Followers, and a nice review or reference document for seasoned Leaders as a reminder of what they should be doing. I intentionally designed this series to be your Swiss Army Knife of both Leadership and Followership training – the one I never had.

If you’re looking for a way to enhance your career, to become absolutely essential to any Leader, and to become better tomorrow than you are today, this is your book.

Meet the Author

I was lucky! From age 7, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to be a Soldier. In 1964, four days after graduating from High School, I joined the US Army and found myself in Basic Training and Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey.A year later, I became a Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1970, I graduated as a 2d Lieutenant headed to Airborne and Ranger School, then off to Viet Nam for a year.In 1978, I returned to West Point to teach Military Science and earned my Master’s Degree from Long Island University in night school. My greatest achievement during my time in the military was helping 1400-soldiers begin their college education during my last two years in Germany as a Battalion Commander. I wanted to give my soldiers something of real value - something that no one could ever take away. After 24 years as a US Army Officer, from Viet Nam to Desert Storm, I retired in 1992. I then decided, with a little help from Anthony Robbins, that my second career would be as an Executive Coach. For the next 20 years, while working for four of the largest outplacement and e-cruiting companies in America from Seattle, San Diego, to Kansas City, I helped hundreds of people, from recent college graduates to CEO’s, find meaningful careers. In 2011, I retired a second time and decided to document everything I learned from all those I willingly followed over the past 50+ years, in both the US Military (as a US Army Officer) and in Corporate America (as an Executive Coach), before their lessons were lost forever. I wanted to pay tribute to them because many of them aren’t here today to tell their stories. My greatest joy comes from writing books that help others avoid or overcome the problems I’ve faced during my lifetime. That same year, I created The Career Maker, a site dedicated to providing career advice to those who want to enhance their career by becoming absolutely essential to any employer, have just lost their job, are changing careers (like those leaving the US Military), or are stuck in a dead-end job just trading time for money.Today, I’m privileged to live in Lee’s Summit, Missouri (near Kansas City), where I enjoy writing, eating sushi, and watching movies with family, friends and my best friend - my wife, Diana. When I count my blessings, I always count her twice.
