For millions of people, a pet is more than just an animal that shares a living space. These millions will do anything they can to recover a four-legged member of the family when it goes missing: unfortunately, most people just don't know where to look. Kat Albrecht is the person they call. Disillusioned by a police career where her brilliant search dogs and own dog-tracking techniques rarely got a chance to shine, Kat started training her retired weimaraner Rachel to search for lost animals-and found a whole new arena opening up. To the amusement of her skeptical colleagues, Kat decided to transform her newfound avocation into a business, becoming the only law-enforcement-based pet detective in the United States.

Using investigative techniques such as probability theory, behavioral profiling, and physical searches by trained dogs, Kat Albrecht has helped more than eighteen hundred pet owners locate their lost dogs, cats, snakes, turtles, parrots, and horses. Along the way, she has faced one-of-a-kind challenges in her work: technical issues like teaching her trained search dogs to pursue missing pets, unexpected roadblocks (how do you convince a forensics lab to conduct a DNA test on a cat's whisker?), and the surprising difficulties associated with living in the shadow of Ace Ventura. But these challenges are balanced by unique joys each time Kat helps reunite a missing pet with its owners.

The Lost Pet Chronicles tells the fascinating story of Kat's unlikely career path-and of how, along the way, doing the work she loved transformed her from a dissatisfied, disaffected cop into a woman who has found her true calling.

Publishers Weekly
In this thoroughly engaging book, Albrecht narrates, with deadpan humor and Grisham-like suspense, the story of how she came to create an entirely new career: lost pet search and rescue. As a police dispatcher and later a police officer in California, Albrecht was duty bound to give human emergencies priority over animal crises, but it wasn't until her Eeyore-like bloodhound, A.J., went missing that Albrecht saw the need for sophisticated detective and scent trail work to find pets. Going against the advice of colleagues and even friends, Albrecht trains her dogs-first Rachel, a search-and-rescue Weimeraner, and then bloodhounds Chase and A.J. (who was found)-to scent cats and other dogs in the same way they located lost hikers or on-the-lam criminals. Taking the reader on searches for everything from huskies and terriers to boa constrictors, she describes her dogs' incredible ability to detect scents and shares her own honed deductions about animal and human behavior. Sometimes the author isn't able to find the lost animal and can only return bad news to people, like the owners of Gus, a cat who runs away days after their son's death. Yet with humor and fascinating insight into search-and-rescue work, Albrecht continues to find innovative ways to help animals and the humans who love them, and inspires readers with her dramatic career changes. With an epilogue containing indispensable information on how to look for missing pets, this is a must-read for animal lovers and sleuths alike. (Apr.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Library Journal
Until recently, the only option a desperate pet owner had to track a missing animal was to distribute flyers around the neighborhood and hope for the best. Enter ex-policewoman Albrecht and her two trained search dogs, Rachel and A.J. Permanently disabled in the line of duty and compelled to retire, Albrecht decided to combine her love of police work and the talents of her dogs to become the only law enforcement-based pet detective in the United States. But she is no flip Ace Ventura. In this chronicle of her successes and failures reconnecting lost pets with their owners (she has returned more than 1800 pets), Albrecht offers a serious, engrossing account of her trials and tribulations in gaining acceptance and in training successor detectives and dogs. Her learning experiences ultimately led her to found the Missing Pet Partnership, a national nonprofit organization to establish pet-rescue services. Albrecht completes her book with search-and-recovery strategies for owners who may not have access to the services of a pet detective. Required reading for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and humane society workers, this is highly recommended for libraries serving those populations and for public libraries interested in a unique addition to their animal behavior collection.-Florence Scarinci, Nassau Community Coll. Pet Detective Extraordinaire, Kat Albrecht, (and I give her that official title that no one else in the animal world has the credentials to claim) has worked more wonders with hunks of cheddar cheese than anyone I know. Her passion for her own pets and other people's is admirable and through her passionate pursuits, she was rewarded with a menagerie of personal pets that filled her life with joy when she needed them most. While she was establishing her pet detective business and hunting so many lost cats and dogs, she did not realize that on the periphery, she was being targeted by a motley assortment of cats and dogs that would become her family, thus proving the theory that we don't really find our own pets, they find us. From the time Kat first placed her beloved Weimaraner, Rachel, on a folded sweater in her car as a pup and brought her home, until the day, years later, when Kat's loving hand fed the accomplished search dog that last piece of cheese, a moment before Rachel was put down, Kat's passion for her animals is abundantly evident. Her story of the ups and downs of innovative training that would allow dogs to trail lost pets is highly-entertaining. She was tireless in probing the psyche of both her search dogs and the very pets she searched for, discovering clues to how both often predictably behaved. She learned to literally think as a dog or a cat, and over the years, she honed to perfection her ability to read her search dogs' signals and body language. Her journey was often uphill trying to convince police departments and communities of the value of her services. Her pet searches could lead to jubilation or despair, but through it all, she was courageous and persistent and regardless of the outcome, Kat gave the pet owners solace. Her spunk and positive attitude did not allow her to give up, and as a result, many pet owners were happily reunited with their lost pets. Armed with an amplified hearing device, squares of gauze, a humane trap, a leash, harness and the ever-present cheddar cheese, Kat was off on the trail of lost pets. The book holds educational value as well. I learned that moist air intensifies scent, thus explaining why my own dog has more of a "doggy" odor on a damp day. I learned that lost and injured cats often hide silently under their own porches, and so many times lost pets are found fairly close to their own homes. I also learned the derivation of "caught red handed." And at the end of the book, Kat lists valuable tips and resources for anyone who has lost their pet. This is a book of transitions, both personally and professionally, and the stories told, in an often self-effacing style, are interwoven seamlessly. Kat is a woman who can laugh at herself, show enormous compassion for others and stay true to her vision. Reading the book brought a range of emotions. I laughed as Kat described in charming alliteration maneuvering her stubborn cat, Yogi's "unhappy feline fanny" into a crate as she first tested her dog's ability to find a cat, and I cried when she held her dear Rachel's face next to hers as the dog drew its last breath. The book is nicely paced, and I felt lucky to be a reader that followed along Kat's meandering trail. Kat Albrecht is in the business of healing hearts and in that pursuit she not only helped others but landed on her own two feet after many roadblocks to follow her dream. This is a very enjoyable book. Marilyn Walton Author of Badge on My Collar I &II

I love this book - it changed my life! Kat started Pet Hunters International, where people can be trained as Pet Detectives and pet owners with lost pets can find trained Pet Detectives with Search Dogs. She also started Missing Pet Partnership, which helps people with lost pet information. This book is a great read, and I couldn't put it down. It details Kat's journey as a person trying to become a Pet Detective. Without this book I wouldn't have my own business as a Pet Detective, called Pet Search and Rescue. Thanks Kat! Seldom in life have I been inspired by others, but Kat Albrecht is an inspiration to all. She followed her dream, grabbed for the brass ring and actually CAUGHT it. To anyone who has a hidden desire or a dream that others have scoffed at, READ THIS BOOK! If you are an animal lover, READ THIS BOOK! You can't help but laugh, cry, and be moved by all that she has done and been through. I'm sure the best is yet to come and personally I can't wait for another book from Ms. Albrecht.
