Pet Detective Extraordinaire, Kat Albrecht, (and I give her that official title that no one else in the animal world has the credentials to claim) has worked more wonders with hunks of cheddar cheese than anyone I know. Her passion for her own pets and other people's is admirable and through her passionate pursuits, she was rewarded with a menagerie of personal pets that filled her life with joy when she needed them most. While she was establishing her pet detective business and hunting so many lost cats and dogs, she did not realize that on the periphery, she was being targeted by a motley assortment of cats and dogs that would become her family, thus proving the theory that we don't really find our own pets, they find us.
From the time Kat first placed her beloved Weimaraner, Rachel, on a folded sweater in her car as a pup and brought her home, until the day, years later, when Kat's loving hand fed the accomplished search dog that last piece of cheese, a moment before Rachel was put down, Kat's passion for her animals is abundantly evident. Her story of the ups and downs of innovative training that would allow dogs to trail lost pets is highly-entertaining. She was tireless in probing the psyche of both her search dogs and the very pets she searched for, discovering clues to how both often predictably behaved. She learned to literally think as a dog or a cat, and over the years, she honed to perfection her ability to read her search dogs' signals and body language. Her journey was often uphill trying to convince police departments and communities of the value of her services. Her pet searches could lead to jubilation or despair, but through it all, she was courageous and persistent and regardless of the outcome, Kat gave the pet owners solace. Her spunk and positive attitude did not allow her to give up, and as a result, many pet owners were happily reunited with their lost pets. Armed with an amplified hearing device, squares of gauze, a humane trap, a leash, harness and the ever-present cheddar cheese, Kat was off on the trail of lost pets.
The book holds educational value as well. I learned that moist air intensifies scent, thus explaining why my own dog has more of a "doggy" odor on a damp day. I learned that lost and injured cats often hide silently under their own porches, and so many times lost pets are found fairly close to their own homes. I also learned the derivation of "caught red handed." And at the end of the book, Kat lists valuable tips and resources for anyone who has lost their pet.
This is a book of transitions, both personally and professionally, and the stories told, in an often self-effacing style, are interwoven seamlessly. Kat is a woman who can laugh at herself, show enormous compassion for others and stay true to her vision.
Reading the book brought a range of emotions. I laughed as Kat described in charming alliteration maneuvering her stubborn cat, Yogi's "unhappy feline fanny" into a crate as she first tested her dog's ability to find a cat, and I cried when she held her dear Rachel's face next to hers as the dog drew its last breath.
The book is nicely paced, and I felt lucky to be a reader that followed along Kat's meandering trail. Kat Albrecht is in the business of healing hearts and in that pursuit she not only helped others but landed on her own two feet after many roadblocks to follow her dream. This is a very enjoyable book.

I love this book - it changed my life! Kat started Pet Hunters International, where people can be trained as Pet Detectives and pet owners with lost pets can find trained Pet Detectives with Search Dogs. She also started Missing Pet Partnership, which helps people with lost pet information. This book is a great read, and I couldn't put it down. It details Kat's journey as a person trying to become a Pet Detective. Without this book I wouldn't have my own business as a Pet Detective, called Pet Search and Rescue. Thanks Kat! Seldom in life have I been inspired by others, but Kat Albrecht is an inspiration to all. She followed her dream, grabbed for the brass ring and actually CAUGHT it. To anyone who has a hidden desire or a dream that others have scoffed at, READ THIS BOOK! If you are an animal lover, READ THIS BOOK! You can't help but laugh, cry, and be moved by all that she has done and been through. I'm sure the best is yet to come and personally I can't wait for another book from Ms. Albrecht. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
