Overview

CEO Artur Drakon has been betrayed. The Syndicate Worlds’ government failed to protect its citizens from both the Alliance and the alien enigmas. With a cadre of reliable soldiers under his command, Drakon launches a battle for control of the Midway Star System—assisted by an ally he’s unsure he can trust…

CEO Gwen Iceni was exiled to Midway because she wasn’t ruthless enough in the eyes of her superiors. She proved them wrong by commandeering some of the warships at Midway and declaring the star system’s independence on behalf of the people though staying in charge as “President.” But while she controls the mobile fleet, she has no choice but to rely on “General” Drakon’s ground forces to keep the peace planet-side.

If their coup is to succeed, Drakon and Iceni must put their differences aside to prevent the population of Midway from rebelling against them, to defend their star system from the enigmas—and to ferret out saboteurs determined to reestablish Syndic rule…

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Arthur Drakon has loyally served as commander of the Syndicate World ground forces in the Midway Star System, but now he's been thrown back onto his own resources to protect himself and his remaining cadre from destruction amidst the growing chaos. To survive, he must accept help from unlikely sources; none perhaps more unlikely than Gwen Iceni, a CEO with whom he has no natural rapport. The first novel in Jack Campbell's new Lost Fleets offshoot reconfirms previous plaudits for the series as "military science fiction at its best." A space opera with major weaponry.

    Fun read

Not as exciting as the Black Jack part. But a good cover of some back story on Midway. It leads it self well for a lot more intresting sequels. I am looking forward to more stories from this universe.

    EXTROARDINARY REAF

I never thought I could love a pair of Syndics as much as Iceni and Drakon. This is a must read for any Campbell fan.

    Great Read

Enjoyed it a lot. Good action sequences, good plot. The author spent way too much time, though, building this sub plot that all CEO's are untrustworthy. The subplot detracted from the overall plot which was interesting and well written. All in all, though, a good read. Can't wait for the next one.
