The Love of a Lawmanby Anna Jeffrey
As a teenager, Isabelle Rondeau ran away from her hometown of Callister, Idaho, with the town bad boy. Now, years later, he's left her for another woman and she's returned to Callister to rebuild her own life and connect with family for the sake of her ten-year-old daughter. In her travels away from Callister, she has become a cutting horse trainer of some renown. As the owner of two prize-winning mares and a highbred stallion, she intends to make a living in Callister breeding and training cutting horses. She's through with men. That is, until she runs into the local sheriff, a man she knew in high school and hasn't seen in eighteen years.
Divorced and broke, John Thomas Bradshaw, Jr., ex-ProRodeo star, has come back to Callister to lick his wounds and contemplate his future. Somehow, he's let himself be persuaded to act as the temporary sheriff of Callister County until an election can be held. The last person he expects to run into is his old high school crush. She still has that unruly fiery hair and those mysterious brown eyes that mesmerized him as a teenager. All of the old desires return. He doesn't want to love again, but can he keep from it when he and "Frizzy Izzy" was his first love and they have so much in common? When a local is murdered on his watch and Izzy has a connection, he's forced to call on all of his courage and honor.

This book was just as good as the first "The Love of a Cowboy" It takes place in Idaho, same county and town. John Bradshaw is the "temp" sheriff until the new election in town; Isabelle Rondeau has moved back to her hometown from Texas with her horses and wants to start her life over. They meet after 18 years on a sad note. John always had a crush on Isabelle in high school, but she was involved with someone else. Now after all these years John seeks to have a relationship with Isabelle. Their relationship is sweet and loving and the story takes many twist and turns. I read the book in less than a day, I could not put it down. The suspense in the story keep me on edge. I also loved that Luke and his wife had small parts in it as I Loved Him in the first book. I can't not wait to read the third.
I love all Anna Jeffrey books! And, of course her Dixie Cash series ;-)
The characters in this novel jump off the page. The good writing puts you right in the middle of their lives, in the middle of their small town. The story is about two independent people dealing with personal challenges and hard conflict from their pasts. Both have something to prove to themselves. The main female character starts out showing her strength in how she has handled a cheating partner and what could have been a debilitating handicap if she had let it. The main male character discovers that there's life after professional rodeo and that he really is the man he has always wanted to be. Together these two face an unexpected terrible human tragedy. At the same time, they salvage Isabelle's younger alcoholic brother. As an aside, the heroine has a nerdy ten-year-old daughter who's adorable. It's a well-paced sexy read and if you like stories where the characters turn out to be stronger and better people than they ever thought they could be, this is one for you.
When Isabelle, Izzy, Rondeau returns home to rebuild her life on a horse farm, trouble begins almost immediately. Her child's dog is shot by a mean hearted neighbor, and the sheriff who comes to investigate is John Thomas Bradshaw, a man who has never forgotten Frizzy Izzy, nor been forgotten by her. Both are alone now, except for their young children. His working for her part time solves problems for both of them, and creates others. Electric attraction runs between them, but does Izzy dare act on it when her own brother runs afoul of the law on a regular basis? ........................... Although there are heartwarming moments, there is a flat blandness to the story that makes it less than great. It's an okay story to pass the time with, but not one that will sweep you away from the present world and get you lost in the pages.
