"A brilliantly-paced thriller... Perfectly balanced between character and plot. Very gripping and suspenseful" - Sophie Hannah

Caroline Barber is a civil servant, busy at work trying to avoid being laid off and busy at home holding her noisy and demanding family together. Enlisting the help of a ruthless newspaper reporter, Caroline continues to dig, taking greater and greater risks until she uncovers a conspiracy shocking enough to bring down the government.

    Enjoyed reading this book

When your reading this story, you think Caroline is just an average person. Then you think that you could be Caroline. Very homey and the more you read the serious part of the book starts to come out. Then you are caught in the trap. Can not put it down. This book has 356 pages.

    Engrossing

A plot with multiple twists and turns. As a career civil servant myself I found myself intrigued by the question of how far should institutional loyalty go?

    Grammar nazis

I really hate grammar nazis. British is a proper noun. Wow. It can also be used as an adjective too sweetheart! Better learn your grammar rules before you go off on someone!

I haven't read the book, but "British" is an adjective

I haven't read the book, but "British" is an adjective and a proper noun. Since that seems to be the basis of the 2 stars given by Anonymous, I wouldn't put any credence in it. Hard to go wrong with a British political thriller. I'm going to give it a 5 in advance of the read (verb and noun). :-)

Laughed within the first couple of pages...

...was hooked within the first couple of pages. There were a few spots that were a little confusing, not presented as well/ clearly as it could have been. Otherwise, well written, great characters, terrific story and storytelling--even though I really disliked one of the main protagonists-- the journalist. Definitely goes into the "un- put- down- able list!
