Overview

Is luck just fate, or can you change it?

A groundbreaking new scientific study of the phenomenon of luck—and the ways we can bring good luck into our lives. What is luck? A psychic gift or a question of intelligence? And what is it that lucky people have that unlucky people lack? Psychologist Dr. Richard Wiseman put luck under a scientific microscope for the very first time, examining the different ways in which lucky and unlucky people think and behave. After three years of intensive interviews and experiments with over 400 volunteers, Wiseman arrived at an astonishing conclusion: Luck is something that can be learned. It is available to anyone willing to pay attention to the Four Essential Principles:

  • Creating Chance Opportunities
  • Thinking Lucky
  • Feeling Lucky
  • Denying Fate

Readers can determine their capacity for luck as well as learn to change their luck through helpful exercises that appear throughout the book. Illustrated with anecdotes from the lives of the famous such as Harry Truman and Warren Buffett, The Luck Factor also richly portrays the lives of ordinary people who have been extraordinarily lucky or unlucky. Finally Dr. Wiseman gives us a look into “The Luck School” where he instructs unlucky people and also teaches lucky people how to further enhance their luck.

Smart, enlightening, fun to read, and easy to follow, The Luck Factor will give you revolutionary insight into the lucky mind and could, quite simply, change your life.

About the Author

Dr. Richard Wiseman heads a research unit within the psychology department at the University of Herfordshire in Britain and was recently given the prestigious CSICOP Public Education in Science Award. This is his first book.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Filled with real-life stories from hundreds of interviews; inspirational quotes from the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Oprah Winfrey; and graphed research data from his eight-year study of luck, Wiseman's book promises to offer "a scientifically proven way to understand, control, and increase your luck." While many believe luck is a mystical force influenced by superstitious rituals, Wiseman, psychology chair at the University of Herfordshire in England, claims lucky people simply possess four basic psychological traits unlucky people don't: the ability to maximize chance opportunities, to listen to "gut feelings," to expect good fortune and to see the bright side of bad luck. Questionnaires and exercises offer guidance on how to acquire or enhance luckiness while keeping a "luck journal" and incorporating techniques to increase intuition, stop negative self-fulfilling prophecies and learn how to effectively network. The format is marked by redundant chapter summaries, but Wiseman's upbeat, charismatic tone might persuade even skeptical readers of the transformative effect luck can have in their personal and professional lives. Library Journal
Wiseman, a British psychologist with his own research unit at the University of Hertforshire, U.K., draws on his eight-year study of lucky and unlucky people, as well as the work of others, to write and support this fascinating and groundbreaking self-help book. What he found is that people are not "born" fortunate: instead, they use four principles (and 12 subprinciples) to achieve their goals-creating chance opportunities, thinking lucky, feeling lucky, and denying fate. To test his conclusions further, the author set up a "Luck School" where he taught both "unlucky" and "lucky" people to increase their good fortune. Wiseman's straightforward, simple style makes a complex topic easy for the average reader to understand. In addition to the usual tests and exercises common to self-help books, he includes visual games to make his points. Given the original content, the easy-to-read prose, and dearth of books on this topic, this work is highly recommended for general and psychological collections.-David Leonhardt, Chesterville, Ont. Lucky I Found This Book

This book came along just at the right time... According to Wiseman, that statement is just the kind of statement a lucky person would make - and I consider myself extremely lucky.

Wiseman writes well and his research makes sense.

It got me thinking... What is "EN" types in the Myers Briggs personality system are more lucky than other types?

Wiseman's research points to that Extroverted - iNtuitive types tend to be luckier than others...

Extroverts becasue they talk to more people than Introverts and iNtuitives because they use their gut to make decisions, whereas Sensing types don't.

I wonder what Jung would make of that since his work on Synchronicity and personality types seems parallel to Wiseman's.

Anyone interested in a video summary of the book, might enjoy this video I made on YouTube summarizing the book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrOgYTFIBow

This was a good read and I learned a few good tips for making sure I'm even more lucky in the future.

Good advice on how to improve your luck

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be much luckier than others? Why do people believe that a piece of jewelry or clothing can bring good luck? Why do they feel the need to avoid things that they consider harbingers of bad luck? In this delightfully written book, Dr. Richard Wiseman shows that good mental health ¿ not superstition ¿ determines good luck. He highlights four of the fundamental psychological principles that lucky people instinctively follow to generate good fortune in their lives. He promises that by keeping a ¿Luck Journal¿ and following the exercises and questionnaires in the book, you can gauge and nurture the source of luck in your life. This book reveals how good psychological habits and positive action can bring good fortune into your life. Wiseman presents his thoughts in a fun way, with entertaining anecdotes. getAbstract recommends this fresh self-help book to those who want to improve the quality of their lives or, in other words, get lucky.

The Science behind the Mystery of Luck

Great book. Gives the 1,2,3s about luck and how to achieve it. Basically, there is NO such thing as bad luck, just luck or no luck at all.

The reality of man is his thought.......

This book is very good. To borrow an analogy from Abdu'l-Baha 'The reality of man is his thought..' It's no wonder then that lucky people or those who see themselves as lucky become lucky eventually. That's where this book makes a difference. It examines the reality of peoples lifes - subjective and objective- not just data. And also explores the impact that thought has when it expresses itself in action. So go on wear 'Lucky Glasses' and see the world differently.

    Interesting Perspective!

This is definitely an interesting book. It views the 'luck' from a scientific perspective. By having 4 simple principles, everyone can increase the chance of luck. In fact, Dr. Wiseman demonstrates the people with luck having a common set of personalities that lead them to have more opportunities than others. Luck is not from your psychic power, it's more the consequence of how you behave and how you view your daily life. This book is similar to the 'Millionaire Mind' by Dr. Thomas Stanley, which depicts the characteristic of being a millionaire. To be a better luck person, it's simple, just be more positive and using Dr. Wiseman's four principles.
