Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kate Walker
The Pet Club is back with a story centering on Lucy and her beloved pet rat, Ajax. Lucy is a gymnast, but unless she has Ajax with her, her tumbling just does not work. To compete in the big meet, Lucy smuggles Ajax into the gymnasium in a special sock in her bag, but after she performs she finds that Ajax is not there! Luckily, Coach saves the day. While the illustrations are very cute and the concept works well for early readers, the plot is a bit illogical, like when Lucy tells Ajax pets are not allowed in the gym, yet all her friends are there cheering with their pets. Readers are led to believe that she tumbles without Ajax, but her coach has him, so she obviously did not tumble without him at all. While very young children might not notice the story's disconnects, it does make the flow of the book and its ending feel abrupt, something easily detectable by most readers. Reviewer: Kate Walker
