I first read this story back in the 80's, during my teenage D&D phase. Recently, while cleaning out the garage I stumbled upon this book again and decided to take a trip down memory lane. I was surprised at just how engrossing this story actually was. The main character, Garth the Overman, is written in a way that truly gives the character a 'non-human' feel. Granted, it's no LOTR, but it is not nearly as pretentious as Tolkien and it won't take you a week to read and enjoy. I cut my fantasy genre teeth on this book and have yet to regret it. Thankfully, this reprinting will allow me to buy yet another copy to replace my raggedy 1980's vintage copy.
