Overview

Vera Henley can't change the past--and doesn't want to. She's pulled the strings of every event at Shaded Valley Lutheran--until now. With the death of her husband, the pastor, annual traditions have become tangled threads of humor and heartache. Suddenly, the old custodian knows more about what's happening around church than Vera does. The new, young pastor is altering time-honored Christmas and Easter celebrations, and the fashionable Lorena Ard is trying to become the new queen bee. Worst of all, the other peppery church women are enjoying these fresh twists. Vera will do what she's always done with change--fix it. But can change be fixed?

The more we try to control, the more we need to realize Who is in control. A heartwarming, funny story of a journey to freedom.
J.G. Spencer
Funny and touching. The characters are human and familiar. There is laughter, tears, and great food. A story that has it all...even a lesson in the telling.

Fast paced but not chaotic, both funny and sad at the same time...and oh how all the traditions and rituals and church ladies and roles and pride and much more blended into such a sweet, sweet story. I have no experience at all with the Lutheran faith, but this "non-denominational" reader recognized in these women the love for the same God I worship and the danger all Christians face of getting so caught up in CHURCH that we sometimes forget what it's there for. Love this book! Review by CherishD

There were so many moments and so many people I could relate to. I laughed out loud, and even cried once. It should be required reading to all those people who have to fix everything.

As the daughter of a German Lutheran mom (and a Baptist dad) this just made me laugh AND homesick for that family now gone. Bravo!

Anyone who has ever lead or been on a committee will tell you that this book it the honest truth. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a Church committee, PTA, whatever – you will know these ladies well. You probably ARE one of them but may not admit it! Vera has been a pastor’s daughter, pastor’s wife and is now a pastor’s widow. She has run the Shaded Valley Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma her way for the past 25 years and now doesn’t know what to do with herself. So she continues on…..and on….. The other ladies in the Ladies Circle haven’t been happy with Vera for years but – she was the pastor’s wife and that was that. However, the “times they are a-changin’.” This book is hilarious, sad and wonderful. These ladies are their own worst enemies but strive to do Good Work for their church; sometimes in spite of themselves. There are such funny stories to be told! My favorite was the Christmas Pageant which Vera appoints the Church Organist to oversee. The kids are hysterical and I was laughing out loud in many places. Vera may be the husband appointed Manager of the Universe but this time the Universe seems to be trying to tell her something: LISTEN!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The charactors were authenic and so true to life that you felt like you knew each one personally. Life in the lutheran Ladies Society and I'm sure in any womens group is humourously depicted. READ THIS FOR FUN!

This 190 page book was pretty good. It was humorous and sometimes very sad. The situations wete very realistic. It is Christian fiction and most of the book takes place in the church. I know people just like most of the ones in this book. My favorite was Aunt Ule. There is a lot of preachiness in this novel, yet it is not the holier than thou type, it just the why the women are living their lives. I would have liked to have known if the pregnant character came to terms with her pregnancy and if she had a boy or girl baby, but this was the only unfinished thread. No adult topics. AD

Recommended - fast and funny, or most of it is. Anyone who has worked on a church committee - regardless of the church affiliation - has met or heard of someone like Vera and Lorena. You'll laugh and get frustrated with them -- same as in real life situations on a church committee. Even with their "faults" their intentions are to make things better. Surprise ending

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were very real and easy to relate to. I enjoyed getting to know them. I found myself going from laughter to tears; and a couple of times my mouth opened but I was speechless :) I have purchased the 2nd book in the series and am off to get started on it. I recommend this book.

This book was not what I expected. It is a journey of self discovery and awakening, but is laugh out loud funny. The ending is both sad and satisfying. This book is part of a series, but stands on its own. It has a highly religious setting, yet manages to make a point without being preachy. I highly recommend this book.

Fun Christian read with dry humor, intelligent wit, and good charactor development. You can see those church ladies in your minds as you read along. Plot dragged a bit but ending was fitting. May buy more in the series for those times you want to read an easy story without having to think.

well written and humorous as well as thought provoking, really makes you think about how well what you say is shown in how you act

Unable to finish because it was a bit choppy between chapters. Interesting concept for a story.

Being raised Lutheran, this brought back memories. It was cute and enjoyable. Any denomination could have been inserted. No one is immune!

I read this because I'm Lutheran, and I enjoyed the references to our traditions. If you aren't Lutheran, just skip over the parts that don't make sense. This is a good story that really gets going in the last half. I was feeling very sorry for the character of Vera, even considered not finishing the book, but WOW it takes a great turn ...... stick with this one, I couldn't put it down after a certain point.

What a wonderful story. This was set in a church situation but has been played in many organizations. Not maliciously, but with good intent to lead people and be helpful. Funny and heart rending at the same time.
