Library Journal - Library Journal
The author, a history professor, has based his first novel on a tragic event that took place in Wisconsin in 1889. It is a grim story of farmer John Hanson, a vicious man who brutalized his wife, his stepson, and nearly everyone else. When he returns from a five-year prison term Hanson vows vengeance against his family. His neighbors, wife, and stepson, unable to obtain protection from the law, take the law into their own hands. Although the style lacks distinction and the story is too spare, the reader will not put it down unfinished. Sister Avila, Acad. of the Holy Angels, Minneapolis
