The Magic Numbers

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
It was either clairvoyance or self-fulfilling prophecy when the parents of Magic Numbers frontman Romeo Stodart named him -- his band's bewitching debut is one giant musical swoon. Burly and bearded, Stodart may appear to be an unlikely frontman, but he possesses a heart nearly as large as he is, plus a soulful voice and songwriting chops that Jimmy Webb would appreciate. The rest of the London quartet -- Stodart's sister, Michelle, on bass and a second set of siblings (Sean and Angela Gannon) rounding out the lineup -- are no slouches either, churning out stick-in-your-head melodies and a lush, chiming guitar sound that hark back to the late-'60s West Coast rock scene. ...

Like a lot of the music from that era, the Magic Numbers evoke a wistfulness that is world-weary but alive in the moment. Even the most heartbroken songs on their Mercury Prize┬ľnominated debut -- the pure pop of "Love Me Like You," and Romeo and Angela's duet "The Mule" -- have a sense of hope. In the Magic Numbers' world, a love affair gone wrong is like the last week of a perfect summer: sad it's over, but happy to have been a part of it. And that's magic indeed.

    Fresh

Immensely likable group with fun harmonies and light and fresh instrumentation. Definite benefit having both male and female vocals. Songs are diverse.

Magic Numbers: A "Feel Good" Album

It's refreshing to have a band come out with an album that doesn't rely on electronic gadgetry and technology to get their sound. The Magic Numbers utilize 3-part harmonies with folk in their songs. Their muse is drawn from many artists: singer songwriters (Cohen, Dylan) & 60's harmony groups (Mamas & Papas, Lovin' Spoonful). The Magic Numbers contains melodies that you can't forget and that will have you humming for a long time. Their first hit from their debut album is "Forever Lost," a beautiful song that depicts heartbreak & disillusion. The jangley guitar gallops with catchy bass riff complimented with harmonies that would make the Everly Brothers and Mamas & Papas proud.
