    Tantalizing

This is a well organized book divided into chapters addressing necessary and useful equipment, basics of photography (e.g., shutter speed, lens speed, f-stop, depth of field, white balance, et al.), and various categories of nature photography: landscape, flowers, wildlife, macrophotography, and others. Each chapter is wonderfully illustrated with stunning photographs by the author and an invited photographer renowned for his/her work in that area. Each chapter also includes summary points, hints, exercises to improve skills and suggested web resources (including the link to the guest photographer's web site). I suspect Mr. Sheppard did not describe his techniques for each photograph to force the reader to develop his/her own photographic eye. This is a very good resource for an enthusiast photographer already comfortable using a digital camera.

A Review of 'The Magic of Digital Nature Photography'

Although I did get a few good ideas from Mr. Sheppard's book, I thought he was a bit skimpy on the technical data. I would liked to have seen him talk a little bit on how he took his photos. After all, it is 'magic,' and he deserves to tell his clients (the book buyers) how to get images as good as his. I think Mr. Sheppard could learn from thumbing through Sue Bishop's book 'Photographing Flowers.' In it, she explains how, and why, she took various photos. She even threw in some clunkers to show us what happens when you don't consider all aspects of your image taking.
