Overview

Like it or not, global warming is a hot topic, and it will affect the younger generation the most. So why not turn to the teacher kids like the most, Ms. Frizzle! Only the Friz can boil all the hoopla down to the scientific facts in a fun and informative way.

With trademark simplicity and wit, Joanna Cole explains why the earth is getting warmer, and Bruce Degen's bright, action-filled illustrations make the science easy to understand and fun to learn. This team brings a new, improved understanding to climate change, engaging kids and empowering all. Teachers will cheer!

Kids already love the Magic School Bus, and the love to do what's right by the planet. At last, a way to teach the curriculum and make an impact!

A note from Joanna Cole:

While I was writing The Magic School Bus and the Climate Change Challenge, all I could think about was the kids who will read it. I wanted to give them hope. More than that, I wanted to tell them how their own actions as children can help solve the crisis of global warming. You will see a real blueprint for this in the book.

Our young readers will be voters before we know it, and educating them today will influence their actions as they grow older. Wouldn't it be wonderful if The Magic School Bus could help change the climate for the better?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
Oh, that all students could have an imaginative science teacher like Ms. Frizzle! The Friz loads her students into a magical bus-plane which takes them on a tour of the world. They see first-hand the causes and results of global warming. Student notebook pages are interspersed throughout the text to show their understanding of these concepts. Whimsical illustrations throughout the book show the elements of global warming and the students' reaction to these events on this tour. Questions and answers in the back of the book address what children have read. The text is age appropriate and the humor combined with scientific facts make reading this book fun and informative. Young readers and their parents will learn how to make actionable changes that will make a difference in global warming. Although this is a stand-alone topic, it is part of the "Magic School Bus" series. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
Children's Literature - Remy Dou
Ms. Frizzle has taken children on her magic bus to places practically impossible to visit. In this title from the “The Magic School Bus” seires, she takes readers on a similar ride, only this time, when her students hop aboard, they discover it turns into a plane. Ms. Frizzle flies over the Arctic where she shows everyone how much ice has melted as a result of climate change. She even provides special glasses that allow children to see gas molecules as she explains why Earth has gotten warmer. Every spread of this tale consists of a smorgasbord of facts, asides, graphics, word and thought bubbles, drawings, and text. In fact, Cole attempts to fit almost everything the average person should know about the important topic of climate change in this slim, thirty-seven page picture book. Yet, despite the author’s excellent ability to write scientific content in a format that children may understand, the mere number of facts will likely overwhelm most readers. Moreover, in order to squeeze in all those facts, the author leaves out reasonable connections that would normally help readers understand why proposed solutions to climate change would work. Despite the literary accessibility of this installment, the plethora of facts and graphics cloud its important message. Reviewer: Remy Dou; Ages 6 to 9.
