Ms. Plum's third-grade class always has something…different about it. But no former students can ever seem to express what it is. This year's class comes into the year eager with anticipation to discover what kind of magic takes places behind the doors of this mysterious classroom. When Ms. Plum asks the first student to get a pencil from the supply closet, Tashala exits the closet followed by a live miniature horse. The next student to enter the closet returns with a talking parrot. The closet continues to deliver an animal to every student who enters, and Ms. Plum uses this to teach each child an individual lesson, one which that child specifically needed to learn. A book of magical intrigue, The Magical Ms. Plum will illuminate the imagination while teaching readers valuable, stimulating lessons. By using sometimes lovable, sometimes frightening animals, this book provides a creative avenue to learn how to speak up, how to speak less, how to turn a frown upside down, or how to not be scared of the world. Gr 2–4—Nearly every child at Springtime Elementary knows there is something unusual about Ms. Plum's third-grade classroom although former students never say much about it. It seems that anytime they try to talk about it, something funny happens to their mouths. At the start of the school year, the class is curious and, maybe, a little scared to find out what's so special about Ms. Plum. They quickly learn that it's her supply closet. Whenever she asks students to get an eraser or pencil, they return with a mysterious animal—one with a cure to whatever ails them. Jeremy, the gloomiest kid in the room, returns from the supply closet with a glowering raven that repeats the phrase "pig snout" until Jeremy dissolves into a fit of giggles. Nadia, a worrier, returns with a kitten that drowns out a classmate's doom-and-gloom comments with its purring. The book is reminiscent of Candace Fleming's The Fabled Fourth Graders of Aesop Elementary School (Random, 2007) in tone and telling. Readers will relate to the youngsters' problems and enjoy their magical resolutions.     Really fun

    Indeed.it's true that everyone wants to be in Ms. Plum's class. I especially would have loved to have been in such a magical classroom as a child. This is most certainly a children's book, which is not usually a book that I review and recommend, but upon seeing the title, I knew it would be the kind of book that a lot of people would enjoy. I feel like it should be added to the list of great children's books that become classic over time, like Where the Wild Things Are and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

    Even for adults, it's an interesting allegory that can give some insight into who you were as a child and who you've become as an adult. Honestly, I kind of wish that there was a magical Ms. Plum right now that would show me some of my personal character flaws in order to help me figure out how to right them. I recommend this book to children, parents and teachers.
