For a young bulldog named Noelle, the joy of being adopted by her very own little girl is overshadowed by the worry that she won't fit in to her wonderful new home.

What can an odd–looking brown pup possibly have to offer in a world where shimmering fish, glittering fireflies, and beautiful Dalmatians play games that Noelle's short legs can barely keep up with?

Five–time GRAMMY® Award–winning singer–songwriter Gloria Estefan's first book for children is a heartwarming story. Exuberantly illustrated by Michael Garland, it captures all the worry of an outsider trying to fit in – and all the joy of discovering that everyone has a talent that matters, and that true beauty comes from inside.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Little bulldog Noelle looks pugnacious, but she's actually just an adorable pup who is worried that she will be an odd-shaped outsider in her new home. This sweet story about fitting in is the first children's book by the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Gloria Estefan.
Publishers Weekly
As singer/songwriter Estefan's first book opens, a girl welcomes her new pet: "With most of her features so oddly arranged,/ compared to most Bulldogs she looked a bit strange." Noelle soon learns that she otherwise fails to measure up: she can't run fast like Dalmatians and sinks when she tries to swim with the fish. Clunky rhymes (as when the fish spout, " `We thought everyone everywhere knew how to swim.'/ `So did I,' said Noelle. `That's why I jumped in!' ") lead up to a predictable outcome. A sunflower tries to reassure the pooch ("You're quite special, Noelle, with a look you can't beat./ Dark and rich like the earth and, like chocolate, so sweet"), and Noelle dreams of the day "she'd find her mysterious, magical way," which comes the next morning (e.g., she crawls under a car to retrieve a ball for the Dalmatians and rescues a stranded fish). Garland's (SantaKid) electric-hued, at times garish digital artwork is as lacking in subtlety as the narrative. Estefan's talent is better showcased in "Noelle's Song (Been Wishin')" about finding a friend, performed on an accompanying CD. The book will be released simultaneously in a Spanish-language edition, Las magicas y misteriosas aventuras de una bulldog llamada Noelle (ISBN 0-06-082626-6). Ages 4-8. (Nov.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Her very own little girl introduces Noelle the bulldog to her new home. Poor Noelle, she is not that pretty—in fact, "compared to most Bulldogs she looked a bit strange." Noelle has a very bad first day. She is envious of the pack of Dalmatians with their lean grace. The fish in the pond invite Noelle in for a swim, and she sinks like a stone to their, and her, surprise. A firefly perches on Noelle's noise and she is afraid she is going to get stung. The birds ignore her. Noelle feels less than special, even though a sunflower reassures her that she is quite wonderful, "like chocolate, so sweet." Finally her girl comes to pick up the unhappy Noelle and kiss her. The next day Noelle discovers how special she is—she rescues the Dalmatians' ball from under the car, she gently drops a fish trapped on land back into the pond, and she feeds the birds who paid no attention to her the day before. The final illustration shows Noelle surrounded by grateful birds, fish, Dalmatians, and happy girl. The message about strength and beauty coming from inside is clearly spelled out. The rhyming verse story works surprisingly well and lavishly colored illustrations move the story along. The enclosed CD has a teen pop sound and may not interest the 4- to 6-year-old child. Also, any child looking for the magic and mystery promised by the title may be disappointed by Noelle's concrete, everyday experiences in her new home. 2005, Rayo/HarperCollins Publishers, Ages 4 to 6.

    A Keeper for any Library

I first purchased this book for a class I was taking and read it, writing a review on it's content and educational value. As I re-read this book, I found that it would be a great read for my preschoolers so I took it to school and read it to the children. After finishing this book, the children were full of questions and comments. It has since become a favorite for the children and myself as well. I would recommend this book for any library and know that your children will enjoy it as much as mine do. Looking forward to reading more books about Noelle the Bulldog. A great book for teaching children about relationahips and feelings while making a fun story that holds their attention and keeps them coming back for more.

Gloria Estefan's First Book Proves She Can Write

Singer Gloria Estefan is the latest in a very long line of celebrities who have written a children's book. The question is whether it is well-written and has enduring value as indicated, for example, by the consensus of critical opinion concerning the series of children's books by actress Jamie Lee Curtis or, is it a typical celebrity-written book, which initially sells well based on 'star' power but because it lacks merit, is quickly and deservedly forgotten? Estefan's book -- the first in a series of three inspired by her real-life pet bulldog that her publisher says will feature Noelle as the title character -- is lavishly illustrated by award-winning illustrator Michael Garland, who has illustrated a number of other best selling children's books. Aimed at beginning readers (ages 4 to 8), it tells the story of an unattractive bulldog adopted by a little girl. Noelle, try as she might, can't fit in and compete with her owner's other pet dogs. She comes to believe she is useless and will never be able to contribute to her new family. Events prove otherwise. Noelle becomes a hero and, in a true children's book cliche, saves the day. Estefan has won five Grammy awards for her singing/songwriting and wrote the vast majority of her international hit songs. Here she makes the evolution from songwriting to children's book author in a convincing way. Bilingual, Estefan wrote both the book and an accompanying CD (Noelle's Song -- Been Wishin') in Spanish and English. Estefan immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 16 months in 1959 in the aftermath of Castro's seizure of power in her native Cuba. The parallels between her experience as an immigrant -- what is often called a rags to riches version of the classic American success story -- and Noelle's experience as a new pet trying to fit in with her new family, will be readily apparent to adults who read the book to their children. Children reading the book -- whether Hispanic or other immigrants, or those born in this country -- will no doubt understand the message that everyone has worth and a contribution to make despite superficial differences such as race, ethnicity, physical appearance or other factors that can seem so import to young children who perceive themselves as 'different' than their more conventional peers. Estefan's first effort clearly appears to have enduring worth and -- along with the anticipated second and third books about Noelle's adventures -- should be enjoyed by many generations of beginning readers.

Noelle the Bulldog - Great Book (similar to Stinky the Bulldog)

Being a bulldog lover, I had to check out this book. I was not disappointed. I love the message of being inclusive, and found it very similarly written like another favorite book of mine, Stinky the Bulldog. Stinky had trouble fitting in, just like Noelle did, and both stories ended happily. What would you expect, they are children's books. I would recommend you get both The Magically Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog AND Stinky the Bulldog for your children, grandchildren, school children, or anyone else who is having a tough time fitting in.

    Classic plot

Many writers have said that the key to a story is to make it your own and Gloria has done it here.
