Overview

Two novels from New York Times bestselling author Lev Grossman: The Magicians and its riveting sequel, The Magician King.

THE MAGICIANS: Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, he’s secretly fascinated with a series of children’s fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams may have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined…

The Magicians
is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination.

THE MAGICIAN KING: Quentin Coldwater should be happy. He escaped a miserable Brooklyn childhood, matriculated at a secret college for magic, and graduated to discover that Fillory—a fictional utopia—was actually real. But even as a Fillorian king, Quentin finds little peace. His old restlessness returns, and he longs for the thrills a heroic quest can bring.

Accompanied by his oldest friend, Julia, Quentin sets off—only to somehow wind up back in the real-world and not in Fillory, as they’d hoped. As the pair struggle to find their way back to their lost kingdom, Quentin is forced to rely on Julia’s illicitly learned sorcery as they face a sinister threat in a world very far from the beloved fantasy novels of their youth.

    A Writing Wizard

Love this book so much and am not usually impressed by modern fantasywriting. Honestly I haven't found a worthy specimen of this genre since I read Harry Potter. The way grossman interweaves modern problematic comingof age themes with a wry sense of humor and brilliant plot was amazing. I have read the magicians series all the way through three times. However I hate how the last 400 pages are missing but that isn't related to the quality of the books.just the quality of nooks.

I didn't have a problem with the file at all. Lets start with the bad: I didn't like the style of writing Mr. Grossman went with, it just wasn't something that I personally liked (which was the only bad thing I have to say about these novels). The story was magnificent, which made up for the writing style in spades. It was in the High Fantasy genre but it was very realistic and down to earth. The story was dark, at points it had me almost yelling at my reading app because I didn't like what was going on but it ended up adding to the story exponentially. I am upset that the last book isn't out yet but I will be one of the first to get it once it does.

If you've read Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia, you may have already read this book.

400 pages of NOTHING after a pretty good first book. I'm not going to spend more money. If they are scamming people into buying the book twice, I'm not falling for it.
