The Magnificent Void

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
This album is one of the finest examples of atmospheric space music, a compelling attempt to solve the riddle of how to use sound to express the great void, the primordial, formless emptiness. On MAGNIFICENT VOID, Steve Roach creates a three-dimensional world of endless sonic plains, engulfing caverns, crystalline vibrations, and heralding trumpets of universal proportions. Distant galaxies groan in birth pangs, while crisp space winds catch the gray matter and roll the brain like a tumbleweed, with only the thinnest thread of reference to reality. Roach uses his sounds to corral the silences and slip the consciousness into the space of eternity. In "Void Memory Two," ...

In "Void Memory Two," the tiniest bell shines brightly from within the massive sounds of an encircling universe. At times ominous (listen to the crystal buzz saw of the title track), MAGNIFICENT VOID is an effective vehicle for inner shamanic voyages and adventures in soul-searching. It's a testament to Roach's skill that the ear is not distracted by wondering, "How did he make that sound?" Roach's music takes you right to the core of experience and becomes even more mind-bending on high-quality headphones.
All Music Guide - Steven McDonald
Cool, majestic, hypnotic, a recording that seems to be designed to place the grandeur of the universe in between your surround speakers. The music conjured up by Roach for this album consists mainly of sweeping tones, broadly painted onto a reverb-drenched canvas, making this a perfect album for internal games involving mental planetariums, stargazing of the soul. The Magnificent Void is immense, chilly and captivating, musical science fiction that leaves behind a shocking emptiness when the last tone drifts away into the universe.
