PreS-Gr 2-Winky, Skipper, and Tag are animal friends who overcome the boredom of a rainy day by forming a club to make crafts, foods, and gifts. Each month of the year they find something amusing to cook or create. Most projects are old favorites-pine cone bird feeders, pasta jewelry, paper flowers. Easy-to-follow directions and inexpensive materials make these projects accessible to younger children. A comic-strip layout, drawn in watercolor and colored pencil, makes the book pleasant to browse through. An adviso about safety, substitution of materials, and adult help is included. Libraries seeking additional craft books might give this one a try.-Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Library, Alexandria, VA
Finally, a crafts/cook book that really is geared to preschoolers. So many books of this type are heavy on projects that are (1) impossible without lots of adult help or (2) impossible even with adult help. But this book, which is in a picture-book format, provides easy activities such as polka-dot toast (cream cheese with raisins), pet rocks, and pinecone bird feeders. There's one project per month, and a trio of animals, two young squirrels and a little raccoon, introduces each one. The appealing pictures, done in jelly bean colors, and the easily understood text make this a fun choice for schools and homes.
