Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Ava Ehde
This easy-to-browse American history book is chock-full of eye-catching and informative key events. It can be used to discretely research particular periods in history or as a great overview of the America of 1492 to the present day. Each chapter starts with an excellent preview, running like a toolbar across the bottom of the pages, with a short synopsis of events and years. The text size is generous and there are a number of short essays in each chapter, most of which are less than two pages. The clear and colorful drawings and photographs help to illustrate events, people and memorabilia. Also included are maps, broadsides, political cartoons, advertisements and products of the era. Each chapter also includes a full-page biography of a key individual or a hot issue of the period. The layout uses white space well, helping to create an inviting and attention-grabbing volume. Also included are historical documents reprinted in their entirety, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights, the Gettysburg Address, and the Declaration of Sentiments. There are some informative sections, such as "Web Sites to Explore" and "Historical Places to Visit." A list of the states and the year they entered the Union, as well as the U.S. presidents and their terms of office, follows. Written more like a series of vignettes than a dry reference resource, this book will hold the attention and interest of middle and high school students. Reviewer: Ava Ehde
