Overview

For anyone who worships the male body or wants to know why others do (TASCHEN's 25th anniversary special edition) While the female nude has long played a concpicuous role in western iconography, the male nude has not always enjoyed such adoration. This collection provides an overdue review of material that at one time could only be bought under the counter, beginning with the anonymous erotica of the 19th century. It features the pioneer homoerotic nude photographs of Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden, posing nude youths in classical postures at Taormina in Sicily. It includes illustrations from groundbreaking magazines such as Physique Pictorial, the leading organ of the mid-50s gay scene, and it covers the entire range from classic masters of male nude photography, such as Herbert List, George Platt Lynes or Robert Mapplethorpe, to the pin-up beefcake of the sex magazines.

    High Ratings for Sheer Quantity

A massive volume of well-documented (though sometimes inaccurately) and beautifully printed images by nearly every great photographer of male nudes since the camera was invented. If you know only a few studios or a single era of male nudes, this is a great way to place your favorites within their historical context. Divided by decades, their is a brief history at the beginning of each chapter. Fans of some photographers, like Jim French (a.k.a. Rip Colt of Colt Studio), will wag a finger at Leddick for listing easily-identifiable images as 'Anonymous'. If you simply want to indulge an erotic whim, a magazine from the local adult bookstore might be less overwhelming. This book is meant to inform and challenge our appreciation of the male nude through a myriad of lenses.

    Pretty good

Overall this is a good collection of nude photos of men. I thought there were a few too many though from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Another qualm I had was there weren't enough men of color, and some of the photos were very poor in quality & a little too much on the trashy side. A good book though if you want a quick fix of naked men, as there are tons of photos. Some of the photos had tremendous artistic value as the photographers made good use of light & shading. Just so you know, there's a lot of full frontal nudity & some homoeroticism. Keep this book out of the reach of children, art haters & prudes!
