Barnes & Noble - Jon Wiederhorn
Although Glaswegian band Travis first surfaced in 1997 declaring, "All I wanna do is rock" on their debut album, GOOD FEELING, they've since been singled out by critics as the act most likely to save British rock precisely because their follow-up doesn't rock. Instead, THE MAN WHO sways, drifts, and comforts in a mildly melancholy fashion, sounding something like ten variations on Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees." Actually, vocalist Fran Healy sounds like a less tortured Thom Yorke, painting evocative portraits through the tone of his voice the lyrics only color the pictures. But musically, Travis are much simpler than Radiohead, writing the equivalent of folk tunes compared to Yorke and co.'s classical compositions. Still, as artists from Bob Dylan to Oasis have proven time and again, the right three chords presented in the right way can move millions. And Travis know how to touch a chord, whether chiming reflectively on "Writing to Reach You," strumming plangently in "The Fear," or bobbing lazily on the string-inflected "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" which was a huge hit across Europe. Even if Travis can't duplicate their success in the States, THE MAN WHO will go down as one of the best English pop records of the year.
All Music Guide - Jason Damas
After their successful debut album of murky pop, Travis seemingly felt a need to tinker with the formula. The product of this change is The Man Who, a quiet album filled to the brim with atmospheric and introspective ballads. Acoustic guitars and tranquil melodies rule here, as this release is an entirely different affair than the band's revved-up debut. Fortunately for Travis, this disc became a massive U.K. hit, spawning no less than five hugely successful singles. The album highlight is "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?," a sweeping singalong that took England by storm and became one of the biggest hits of 1999.

TRAVIS ARE NOT ENGLISH!!!! THEY ARE SCOTTISH!!!!

This is a great album, but that doesn't matter, because Travis aren't English!!!! How your reviewer can write "Glaswegian band", and still refer to them as English, is frankly beyond me. How about those "Canadians" Nirvana from Seattle? I can only guess that the reviewer is an American, and, as such, doesn't have a clue.

    Caught

The album is fantastic and has been one of the pirmary CD's in my player. The TV was on in the background when I first heard them and I stopped and stared in awe of the song ''Why Does It Always Rain On Me?''. It just summed up everything that I had been feeling at that time and I have been a fan since. When a song has the capability to evoke strong emotions, it is a good one. But when an entire album has that capablity, it is a great one.

    My favorite CD ever!!!

Travis has got to be my favorite band of all tme. As a listener of all genres of music, I have never heard such good guitar and such a beautiful voice as Fran's. Driftwood is my favorite song on the CD and if you can find a ''Coming around'' single, that one kicks butt too. If you can see them live, do it!! They sound 10 times better than the CD. Hard to believe, but amazingly enough it is true.

    Drift Away!

If you have never heard of Travis please make an effort. A great reflection of British music as it stands at the moment. I've managed to escape thanks to songs that are simple and well written. You should too.

The first time I haerd Travis was in concert in Ireland with Oasis, They were brillant,I think this is One of the best albums of the last 6 years.Since Oasis were chilling out for two years music in britian was not great.I did not like any of the 80's brit pop thats out at the moment, you will never beat a person sitting down writing his feelings on a Guitar and Travis did this very well grat band

    WoW!! This blew me away.....

I had never heard of Travis before I saw them in concert in Atlanta with Oasis, but I was immediately hooked. I bought the CD the next day. This album is very mellow, pretty much acoustic all the way through, and they have a great sound. My favourites are 'Driftwood' and 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me.' I can't recommend this highly enough, and it is quite a departure from my usual of late.

    Top, Just Top

The album by Travis has to be one of the greatest albums ever made. To prove this, just take a look at the UK Album charts from the last year, Travis have stayed in the top 5 all the time, often hitting No.1 time and time again. The album continues to sell in it's thousands every week, and it will easily sell millions in the USA. The album is Top, Just Top.

Actually Not Like Radiohead At All.......

This album will only sound like Radiohead to an unrefined music listener. True music lovers will recognize it for what it is: An amazing guitar album that is more affecting than anything else you will hear this year.
