Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
This first book contains some fine poems reminiscent of the predecessors Cole admires. The keen perceptions of nature, for example, remind us of Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop, with their attention to details and precision of language. Occasionally, Cole strains toward the poetic with ``balmy breezes,'' ``fragile frocks,'' and ``Behold the bronze, wheat-brimming fields!''lines and phrases that seem too archaic to capture the immediacy of the subjects at hand. But, overall, he is as careful with craft as he is with observation. His formalities seem to fit his sensibilities. Grace Bauer, formerly with New Orleans P.L.
