PREFACE

Since the first edition eighteen years ago, I have continued teaching and learning about marine biology. This book is a distillation of what I consider basic, necessary information about life in the ocean for the informed layperson. The new edition adds several habitat descriptions, new coverage of marine birds and sound production in the sea, an expanded section on symbiotic relationships among marine organisms, and updated and increased coverage of marine invertebrates, fish, and reptiles. I have also added two plates on the new technology available for ocean study, including remotely controlled underwater vehicles and fish tags that contain tiny computers capable of communicating vital data to shore via satellite. I hope you enjoy learning from this book.

Coloring isn't just for toddlers anymore!!!

I LOVE this book. It not only has labeled pictures of parts of fish, but it has detailed descriptions of the lifestyle of the fish!
