A not-so-merry widow...

The widowed Marchioness of Folkestone is notorious for her parties, her art collection, and her utter disregard for the rules. But Ellie Claiborne knows her destruction is near. The new marquess is her first lover - the man whose sculpted body and sardonic grin haunt her every time she picks up her paintbrush. If he ever returns to claim his inheritance, her heart won't survive seeing him again.

A man determined to destroy her...

Nicholas Claiborne hasn't stepped foot in England since watching Ellie marry his cousin. He has no use for the gorgeous, heartless girl who betrayed him, or the title she abandoned him for. But when his business in India turns deadly, Nick must return to London to uncover a murderer - and take revenge on the woman he couldn't force himself to forget.

A love they can't escape...

Nick hates Ellie's transformation from sweet debutante to jaded seductress. Ellie despises him for leaving her behind. Still, the sparks between them reignite the passion that should have been their destiny. As their demands of each other turn darker and a potential killer closes in, they must decide whether to guard the fragile remnants of their hearts - or find a way to fall in love all over again.

Loved this book as much as the others in the series, can't wait for the next one!

This is the 3rd book of the series. It will be more enjoyable if read in order to fully appreciate all the secondary character's who cross over to this story. At times I was fed up with Nick and Ellie, how they treated each other. They became more like able at the end. Some surprises-thought I knew who was trying to kill Nick-wrong 2 times on who I thought was the villian. Can't wait for the next book. (Ljb)

The Marquess Who Loved Me by Sara Ramsey is a sweet, fun historical romance novel, perfect for romance fans who like a little bit of murder and mystery. The story revolves around Ellie Claiborne and Nick Claiborne, and the reader soon learns that they were once very much in love. Unfortunately, things didn't exactly turn out in their favor because Ellie wass forced to marry Nick's cousin, thanks to the constant pressures of her father who wassn't fond of Nick. Naturally, this hurts Nick to the core, and throughout the novel we see how his true feelings toward Ellie are a roller coaster that dip between complete desire and outright rage. As if this weren't enough drama, someone is trying to murder Nick, so he must face both matters of the heart and an unidentified murderer. I was impressed with Sara Ramsey's writing and found myself pulled into the world of Nick and Ellie. I do have to admit that I got a little tired of both Nick's and Ellie's ambivalent state of emotions. One second they are ready to make love, and in the next they want to murder each other. Also, at times I didn't like either Nick or Ellie because I thought them to be so selfish and self involved, they weren't seeing the bigger picture. Despite this, I enjoyed the novel and would recommend it to fellow romance fans, especially if you like historical romance stories. I received a free copy by NetGalley through the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Reviewed by: Robin Book provided by: book provided by NetGalley for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book I have to say before I begin that yet again I enjoyed the continuation of The Muses of Mayfair series by Sara Ramsey. With each book she continues on with the lives of the three friends along with their honorary member. Because of this, each book could stand alone; but they are so much more enjoyable if read as the series. It is so very easy to fall in love with the story of each one of these friends. Each woman is so very remarkable in their own right and so very strong. In the third installment we get to follow Ellie Claiborne. Ellie is a very beautiful widow full of life, fire and passion. She married the cousin of the man she loved to please her father. On the outside we see someone who is strong, does what she pleases, and doesn’t follow the rules of the ton. Even though there are rules they tend to overlook them for her as she is very likeable. Ellie’s way of life is actually a façade to hide her broken heart. Entering Ellie’s life is a man from her past Nicholas Claiborne. Nick is Ellie’s other half; Her one true love. He left after he watched her marry his cousin. He went out to earn money as he was what was considered the poor relation at the time. No title and no money. He wants revenge on Ellie for tearing his heart to shreds and throwing it away. Always the bad boy Ellie finds she is still very drawn to Nicholas. Sometimes revenge may not be as sweet as what you imagine it to be in your mind as Ms. Ramsey’s showed us in Nick and Ellie’s story. I loved the love/hate relationship between Ellie and Nick there is that thin line between the two that often becomes very blurred or skewed to where you think one way but it actually is going the other way. She made it so real that you as the reader accepted it as something that was normal. Ms. Ramsey was able to portray the pain that Ellie had even though she pretended to be strong. I loved Ellie’s zest for life and how she was honest about the past even though Nick didn’t want to believe it. There was intensity in Nick’s feelings that came forth and filled him with regret as Ms. Ramsey made Ellie’s character honest giving Nick much more to deal with other than mere revenge. In each of the stories the characters interact and grow without losing sight of the main characters. I am so looking forward to next book as I think Ms. Ramsey may very well have saved the best of the friends for last.

The Marquess Who Loved Me isn't my first book by Sara Ramsey and it won't be my last. I enjoyed reading this well written book. Sara Ramsey has given us a delightful set of characters, suspense, action and steamy bits. I look forward to reading more from Sara Ramsey in the future. The Marquess Who Loved Me is book 3 of the Muses Of Mayfair series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

The style of the writing is adequate -- Ramsey become a better writer with each book.   Her books tends to be humorless and to focus on LONG discussions about feelings, the meanings of these feelings, the strength/weakness of these feelings, the depth/breadth of these feelings, the durability of these feelings, and on and on until I am so bored that it is difficult to continue reading.  I read Regency Romances for their entertainment value.  This book did not entertain me. Ordinarily, I would give a book like this a three-star rating.  But this book is in essence a rape fantasy.  The central female character, Ellie, is forced to have intercourse by and with the central male character, Nick.  It does not matter that the two were lovers in the past.  Not does it matter that  Ellie willingly had sex with Nick the day before the rape.   It is rape because he placed her in an situation where she either had sex with him or was ruined.  Rape is about power, not about desire.  And Nick used the power he had over Ellie to force her to have sex with him.  For me, no happy ending in the world can justify rape. I try to base my opinion of a book on the literary merit of the book.  And rape fantasy is a genre of literature like any other.  But I find the subject so personally offensive  -- and am also offended by a woman writer passing rape off as an act of love -- that I am rating this book on the grounds of its content rather than on its literary merits.  If it were possible to give a rating of 0 stars, I would do so.

There's one thing that I wanted to address before I really got into my review. I always peruse reviews after I write my own. I would hate for what someone else thinks to taint my opinion and thoughts of a fresh read. For some reason, I started reading the reviews before I even flipped a page of this one. There was one reviewer that took me back a bit. They stated that there was a rape scene in this novel. I almost put the book in the Did Not Finish pile right then. Reading about rape just doesn't interest me and I don't think that I would ever read a novel where rape was involved. Kind of a weird thing considering that I can read about grisly murders, but I have my reading limits. Anyhow ... I decided to give the novel a shot anyhow. Dude, there was no rape scene. There wasn't a scene that even REMOTELY resembled rape. This just really chaps my ... rear. There are a lot of readers out there who don't want to read about rape in a romance novel ... they just want a fun, romantic read and this horrible claim could make someone shy away from this novel. I just think it's crappy of a reviewer to do ... give your opinion but don't make false claims about a novel. Okay, I'll jump off of my soap box now. You know, this was an interesting novel. My first reaction to the main character, Ellie, was not good. I didn't like her. I just wanted her to fall at Nicholas' feet and for them to fall in love again. Yeah, I know that that doesn't actually happen in romance novels ... what would be the point of reading it if it were that easy. After a while, I really started to like Ellie though. Both of these characters and the main characters were very well written. I wish that there had been more scenes with Nicholas' brother ... I really liked how he was developing. Maybe he will be the focus in the next novel. And that's really all I had to talk about with this one. Nothing really negative stood out to me and I ended up liking it. It wasn't the best historical novel out there but it wasn't the worst and I would probably pick it up again and read another one from this author.

The Marquess Who Loved Me features a jilted hero and a heroine embittered by love. Ellie and Nick were young lovers with stars in their eyes. Nick was the son of a disgraced nobleman and Ellie the daughter of some seriously snooty aristocrats. Desperate for her father's approval, Ellie abandons Nick and marries his cousin, the Marquess of Folkstone. Broken hearted, Nick moves to India and makes a fortune in trade. The story opens with Nick returning home five years after his cousin's sudden death. He is now the Marquess, and wealthy to boot. Ellie found no happiness in her marriage (or her search for parental approval). She hides within a crowd, throwing lavish parties, becoming the toast of the ton. Nick has devised a scheme to get revenge for being jilted. Ellie's business manager is Nick's brother, Marcus. Marcus borrowed money from Nick's estate to fund Ellie's lifestyle--and now she ows him 40,000 pounds. Nick demands she become his mistress for a period of several months in order to pay off her debt. Personally I've never understood the revenge-sex theme. It's a little squicky and reeks of exploitation. In this case it more or less works becauses Ellie really wants Nick, and they wind up in bed prior to the arrangment. This is one of the sexier regencies I've read, so if you like steamy scenes it should be an auto-buy. The whole mistress thing starts to unravel when Ellie and Nick realize they still have feelings for each other. Add to that a little mystery--someone is trying to kill Nick. It's a sexy romp, with a little intrigue, and it's refreshingly set away from London (a country house party). Recommended for lovers of sexy regency hijinks and revenge plots.

I have found another interesting author. Sara writes a well done serious romance. Yes there are lighthearted moments but this story has many more dark ones. I like books about characters who feel that they have been done wrong .And while I know there should be a HEA at some point in the story I like to imagine if I'm right or I get surprised. I was surprised several times It was hard to see Ellie and NIck try to out detest each other. Check out this story. Then check out the other book in this series. Then enjoy a great series.

Nicholas Clairborne has a so called tainted bloodline and though he loves Elinor and wants to marry her, Ellie's father convinces her to marry Nick's cousin instead because he holds the title. This breaks Nick's heart and he runs off to India to make his fortune. This tale picks up where Nick returns to claim the title now that his cousin is dead and he intends to revenge himself against Ellie. This story will pull you through an emotional wringer. Does he still love her, is she still wild about him? Is his need for revenge stronger than his desire for her? Whew... I'm exhausted. This book is part of a series but easily reads as a stand alone.

THE MARQUESS WHO LOVED ME by Sara Ramsey is an exciting Regency Historical Romance set in 1813 London. #3 in the "Muses of Mayfair",but can be read as a stand alone. See,"Heiress Without a Cause" and "Scotsmen Prefer Blondes". Nicholas Claiborne,Marquess of Folkestone is back and determined to destroy, his one true love, Elinor (Ellie)Claiborne, now, the Marchioness of Folkestone, who married his cousin. Ellie is a widow now and Nick has chased a would be murderer from India which brought him back to London and his lost love. Filled with danger, secrets, regret, passion, revenge, forgiveness and love. Be warned though,Nick and Ellie have a somewhat awkward relationship as Nick is determined to seek his revenge by using Ellie's flesh, once they where young lovers intending to marry, but Ellie chose to marry his cousin,Charles, now Nick feels she owes him. He can not seem to move toward forgiveness, and Ellie can not seem to get Nick out of her system and her heart. But when danger threatens both Nick and the one's he loves including Ellie, revenge is the not what he has in mind. Fast paced. Nick and Ellie's story is unique, but an interesting story of lost love, vengeance and finding that love again. Oh, did I mention the passion between Nick and Ellie particularly ignites the pages. It brings the question do you really get over your first love? I would recommend this title for readers who enjoy historical,Regency, romance and a story with a different twist to it. Ms. Ramsey is a great storyteller. I enjoyed "The Marquess Who Loved Me" and am looking forward to the next installment,"The Earl Who Played With Fire", Muses of Mayfair #4 - coming late 2013. Received for an honest review from the author. RATING: 4.5 HEAT RATING: HOT REVIEWED BY: AprilR, My Book Addiction Reviews
