Finding that people rely too much on their gut when choosing significant others, Sacks developed Mate Map, a structured tool for assessing potential partners, when he was having romantic troubles of his own. Amid some fairly generic overarching guidelines, three "relationship essentials" govern the method: magnetism, love, and personality fit. That last, interesting component comprises profile attributes (such as age, ethnicity, and education) and many spectrum attributes (calm/hotheaded, energetic/mellow, etc.) that help identify attractive qualities. Attributes are scored on a sliding scale, and potential mates rack up points. Illustrative, informative, and not as rigid or wacky as it sounds, Mate Map will at least encourage readers to be a bit more "heads up" when shopping around. More helpful than Laura Doyle's Surrendered Single, which makes landing a man feel like roping a bull, Sacks's work stands as an analytical version of Barbara DeAngelis's Are You the One for Me? Perhaps many of us have all the facts in Mate Map buried somewhere in our mind. However, this book helps pull that all out in a common sense and non-emotional manner which helps end the cycle of relationships that are just less than they could be because some basic needs aren't present. We should teach this method to teenagers before they start dating and divorce judges should mandate that couples granted divorce take a Mate Map course so they won't be back!

I was given this book as a gift and must admit that it was one of the best gifts I have gotten. Not usually reading self-help type books I am very happy that I made an exception with the Mate Map. It reads easily and puts into words ideas that had crossed my mind. It helped define and organize the qualities that are important to me in making the right selection.
