Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This elegantly designed and crafted "book" is overloaded with mathematical facts. Slip off the plastic cover and binder, open the book, and a pyramid pops up with a flap that exposes a dwarfed Statue of Liberty inside. Four flaps picturing Egyptian gods are lifted to paragraphs dealing with hieroglyphics, measuring systems, etc. There are ten more double pages with many assorted ingenious devices to get the reader involved in trying out processes; first simple ones like adding and multiplying. But very soon there is a wheel that demonstrates decimal, fraction and percentage relationships. By page 5 we are into Algebra, then Cartesian Coordinates, and Calculus by page 8. We are taken on a rocket ride through twelve school years of mathematics with problem solving at the end. Imaginative but demanding, this package (replicated on an enclosed CD-ROM) is for curious people of all ages on different levels. It is not suitable for classroom teaching, but could make for fruitful parent-child joint exploration. A removable glossary is enclosed, along with all kinds of items to manipulate for the tactile learner. 1999, Van der Meer Publishing, Ages 8 up, $29.95. Reviewer: Ken Marantz

This book/kit gives wonderful, descriptive, visual explainations of mathematic concepts. I have not seen the CD ROM, but was VERY impressed with the interactive aspect. Fabulous use of 'pop-ups' for educational value.
