Overview

Health and weight management can seem overwhelming, and even frightening, to the more than 23 million Americans who suffer from type 2 diabetes, as well as the 79 million pre-diabetic adults. The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet presents two easy-to-follow phases that work—Lose It! and Live It! The diet is based on principles of The Mayo Clinic Diet, which is designed to help people safely lose 6-10 pounds in two weeks and then continue to lose weight until they achieve a healthy weight they can maintain for a lifetime.

The Lose It! phase of The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet is a simple, straight-forward, two-week plan that encourages quick but safe weight loss that can help lower blood sugar. The Live It! phase of the diet offers basic and manageable steps and lifestyle changes and choices that are designed to help participants lose one to two pounds a week until a healthy weight is reached, and then keep the pounds off.

Mayo Clinic’s weight-loss and nutrition experts have packed this book with meal plans, practical solutions, and specific tips on how to improve health and lose weight safely. The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet tackles all the familiar obstacles that get in the way of weight loss—dislike of exercise, distaste of healthy food, too little time to cook well, a too hectic schedule, struggles with cravings, and minimal support from family and friends. It is a reliable and safe companion for losing weight and controlling diabetes, beginning immediately and into the future.

"This diabetes diet isn't a fad; it's about changing your habits for the better," states Donald Hensrud, M.D., Mayo Clinic specialist in nutrition and internal medicine and medical editor-in-chief. "With The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet, people can truly manage diabetes, eat well, lose weight and enjoy life."

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Expressly designed to help those with diabetes develop healthy eating habits and lose weight, this easy-to-read guide compiled by the doctors at the renowned Mayo Clinic is a helpful and informative resource that certainly achieves those goals. Beginning with an overview of the disease, the authors clearly explain the importance of weight management and encourage readers to begin changing their eating habits immediately and with a minimum of drama. Tips on portion control, simple exercise activities, and finding a healthy weight help diabetics stay on track. And if they do slip up, the authors offer motivation, understanding, and encouragement. Those looking for recipes will be sorely disappointed, as the book offers only a handful; the emphasis here is on leading a healthy lifestyle and developing healthier eating habits, whether at home or in restaurants. Some may find the book's tone and layout to be a little patronizing—it's written at an elementary school level—but those who've recently been diagnosed with diabetes will likely find it to be a welcome resource. Many diabetics could eliminate some medications and improve their general health through maintaining a healthy weight. Similar in style to The Mayo Clinic Diet Book, this book helps achieve that goal. Part 1 provides instructions to jump-start weight loss in the initial two weeks of the prescribed diet by focusing on habits that contribute to weight gain. Part 2 guides readers through gradual weight loss, encouraging journaling to identify habits and patterns that affect success. The last section discusses plate portions, maintaining new eating habits, and what to do when one succumbs to temptation. Common obstacles, along with strategies to overcome them, are listed. VERDICT Concrete advice and tips provide instructions that can be followed by anyone. Excellent color, photos, and layouts strengthen the pertinent, easy-to-read content. The extensive table of contents allows users to navigate easily. An outstanding contribution.—J.M.S.

Meet the Author

Mayo Clinic took root in farm fields near Rochester, Minn., in the late 1800s. It grew from the medical practice of a country doctor, William Worrall Mayo, and the partnership of his two sons, William J. and Charles H. Mayo – affectionately known as Dr. Will and Dr. Charlie.

The brothers' innovative ideas and tireless work in learning and creating new surgical techniques attracted international attention. Physicians from around the world came to watch the Mayo brothers perform surgery.

The Mayo brothers invited other doctors to join them, forming teams of medical experts. Today, Mayo Clinic – one of the world’s oldest and largest multispecialty group practices – comprises more than 45,000 physicians, scientists, nurses and other staff at its three locations in Rochester, Minn., Jacksonville, Fla., and Scottsdale, Ariz., and its regional community-based health care practices.

    Good characterization, weak plot

The book is very good for someone trying to understand and live with Type 2 diabetes. The explanations are simple and clear, which is not a small matter if you're new to the illness and already anxious. This book penetrates the fear that highly technical language can instill in you at these times. Reading it is like talking with an old and caring friend. It tells you what you need to know and what to do without a bit of blaming, shaming, or condescending. There's a companion workbook which takes what the main book recommends and turns it into practical, down-to-earth activities, like exercises, recipes, and journal pages. I recommend it highly. I have one reservation: the plot not a page-turner. Frankly, nothing much happens and it won't keep you awake.

Common sense approach to weight loss

I am very pleased with this book, which is more of a diabetes lifestyle guide than an actual calorie-counting diet plan. Very straightforward and easy to read and follow, it provides lots of helpful background information on living with Type II Diabetes. There is a two-week quick-start plan to get you going, and helpful suggestions to keep you on track after that. Instead of measuring and weighing portions, the book suggests great ways to estimate serving sizes (for example, 1 cup of broccoli = the size of a baseball). I actually have the condition known as pre-diabetes, and this book addresses that, as well. Breaking bad habits and instilling new healthful ones is what the approach is all about, and I am hopeful that I will be able to avoid an eventual diagnosis of diabetes. Also, I am glad that I ordered the book through Barnes & Noble instead of online via Mayo Clinic; I saved a lot that way, as a B&N member.

THIS IS NOT A COOKBOOK!! I feel that the book would by an excellent source for someone who has just learned they had type 2. I was intrerested in recipes to broaden my diet while still adhereing to all the principles set up in this book. Don't buy it if you are looking for recipes.

    Excellent Suggestion!

This book was highly recommended to me by one of my doctors. I wasn't sure I wanted "another" diet book. The diet aspect of this book didn't necessarily teach me anything I didn't already know. It was the diabetes side of this book. Even though I have been living with diabetes for 10 years this book made what I already knew so much clearer. This book was an excellent suggestion.
