Overview

Now in a fully updated Fifth Edition, The M.D. Anderson Surgical Oncology Handbook continues to provide residents, fellows, and attending staff with a clear and concise roadmap to the surgical oncology principles for treating cancer.  The handbook’s authors represent various disciplines within oncology and training programs, and they have spent at least two years at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center studying only surgical oncology.

The handbook’s comprehensive coverage, multidisciplinary perspectives, proven therapeutic strategies, useful algorithms, and recommended readings provide a foundation for maximizing readers’ surgical oncology skills.

Why choose The M.D. Anderson Surgical Oncology Manual?
• Organ system format covers a w ide range of cancer types and makes essential information easy to find and apply.
• Abundant algorithms and line drawings outline the essential elements of diagnosis, staging, and clinical management of solid tumors treated in surgical practice.
• Multidisciplinary perspectives address treatment planning, therapy sequencing, and biologic therapies.
• Coverage of current controversies lets readers assess a range of viewpoints and approaches.

New to the Fifth Edition…
• New chapters address neuro-oncology and radiation oncology.
• Extensive updates include new information on radiation therapy and recent clinical trials in oncology.
Greater emphasis on multi-modality treatment broadens therapeutic options.
New protocols and staging classifications keep readers up to date.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David L Ring, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This book outlines the basic principles of surgical oncology and clearly groups malignancy by organ system or primary site. The previous edition was published in 2006, and new research and treatments make this update essential.
Purpose: Surgical oncology is a growing and important field in general surgery and this handbook is an excellent reference on both the basics of surgical oncology and the fine points of treatment of specific malignancies from one of the premier oncology institutions in the world.
Audience: It will be used by a wide range of physicians and physicians in training, including clinical year medical students, junior and senior level residents, and even practicing general surgeons. It also could be used by medical oncologists as a succinct guide to the surgical treatment of various malignancies.
Features: Addressing malignancies requiring surgical intervention, the book breaks these down by primary site or organ system affected (i.e. breast, melanoma, head and neck, esophagus, etc). Chapters then discuss epidemiology, risk factors, pathology, diagnosis, staging, and treatment (both medical and surgical). The book includes excellent algorithms for the treatment and management of the various diseases and discusses controversies in care quite well. The tables and figures are helpful and add value for readers. Breast cancer, both noninvasive and invasive, is covered particularly well and in great detail. The chapter on pharmacology also is quite helpful; it provides a quick reference for chemotherapeutic drugs and commonly used medications in the treatment of cancer patients. One suggestion for a future edition is a section on pediatric oncology covering the more common pediatric tumors (e.g. Wilm's, neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, etc.).
Assessment: This book has exceeded my expectations. It is easy to read and provides concise and relevant information. I will continue to use it throughout the remainder of my residency and into my practice and I will recommend it to all of my colleagues.
