Overview

The great walled castles of the medieval world continue to fascinate the modern world. Today, the remains of medieval forts and walls throughout Europe are popular tourist sites. Unlike many other books on castles, The Medieval Fortress is unique in its comprehensive treatment of these architectural wonders from a military perspective. The Medieval Fortress includes an analysis of the origins and evolution of castles and other walled defenses, a detailed description of their major components, and the reasons for their eventual decline. The authors, acclaimed fortification experts J.E. and H.W. Kaufmann, explain how the military strategies and weapons used in the Middle Ages led to many modifications of these structures. All of the representative types of castles and fortifications are discussed, from the British Isles, Ireland, France, Germany, Moorish Spain, Italy, as far east as Poland and Russia, as well as Muslim and Crusader castles in the Middle East. Over 200 photographs and 300 extraordinarily detailed technical drawings, plans, and sketches by Robert M. Jurga accompany and enrich the main text.

An extremely informative book about Medieval Fortresses!

If I were to ask you, 'What is a hoarding?' or 'What is a plinth and what was its function' or even 'What is a Medieval toilet called,' would you be able to answer me? If not, you'll find the answers to my questions within this extraodinary book of Medieval Fortresses, Forts, and Castles, all, in which, are explained and depicted satisfyingly through the elaboration and cultural stead of the entire European and Middle Eastern regions. You will not be disappointed, I can assure you. This book has it all. Ranging from techniques to defending/assualting a castle to the very pithe of what a complementary discussion of castle society established for better understanding of what life was like within the enceintez of a fortress. And there is much, so much more! There are over hundreds of castles that this book provides through the visionary of pictures (sadly they are in black and white) and the peripheral image of fine description of the castle through words. This books has everything, to a more than satisfying extent, everything that will have your teachers guessing at 'what is a castle's hoarding?' or 'what is the function of the plinth of a castle' and 'what was a medieval toilet called?' Rest assured, the book is worth the money and doubly the knowledge etched within.
