An old idea with a modern day voice.

"Meditation brings wisdom; lack of mediation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom." (Buddha). The art of meditation is usually perceived as something only Buddhists or other people of India do, but if meditation is looked at in the vast spectrum of the world it is apparent that every human being will at some point meditate. Daniel Goleman, author of "The Meditative Mind', completely understands the fundamentals of meditation and describes them in a very detailed way. He explains the ample amount of ways to achieve zen. Also the way he writes is very unique and you may find yourself learning much more from this book than imagined.
The first and most common way of meditation is using the idea of jhana or full mental absorption. To achieve nirvana using jhana one must free their mind of all thoughts and emotions, and be completely free of the chains that hold your mind down. There are a total of 8 levels of jhana. One level I found interesting is the 5th level where the mind will feel feel bliss and you could have visions. Goleman stated that if at this level you ever meet Buddha you should strive to kill him. I thought that was strange, but Goleman explains that it is because at that level many people would get stuck and never achieve the 8th level due to the beauty of the 5th.
I believe this book is aimed at a college level due to Goleman's style of writing. It built up fairly well starting with small easy ideas to tougher ones to explain, but it was tough to read and stay interested. He had many diagrams throughout the book though to help explain some of the level of meditation which was very useful.
Overall I would give this book a personal rating of 3 out of 5 stars due to the fact that a began to lose interest towards the end. Although I would still recommend people to try to read it, because the ideas are very interesting. Goleman is a very intelligent man since he know so much about meditation his words will have your mind thinks very deeply about the simplest things
