Children's Literature
Flowing through six Asian nations and along 2600 miles, the Mekong is one of the most impressive rivers on the Asian continent. The source of the Mekong River is in Tibet in an area known as "The Roof of the World." From this mountainous region the Mekong flows through portions of China, Burma, Laos and Cambodia. Eventually, the Mekong reaches the shores of the South China Sea in southern Vietnam, its mouth. Along its length, vastly diverse sets of people exist and make their livings. There is a saying in Southeast Asia regarding the Mekong¾the Lao people live near the water, the Cambodians live on it and the Vietnamese live in it. Despite these cultural differences, the people who reside near the Mekong depend upon it for food, transportation and sustenance. The story of this great river is the subject of this volume of the "World of Water" series published by Watts Library. This colorfully illustrated and informative book will provide useful information regarding a little known and far off locale. Of particular interest are the sections dealing with ancient civilizations that arose along the Mekong. 2001, Franklin Watts, $24.00 and $8.95. Ages 10 to 14. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
From The Critics
Gr 4-8-Thoroughly researched and smartly organized, these titles are worthwhile additions to any library. They each present a multifaceted look at one particular river's impact on the area's landforms, industry, and history. The texts are sprightly and packed with facts. The focused chapters seem especially well reasoned, which enhances their readability and usefulness for research. Fine full-color photos, maps, and historical photos appear throughout. (The otherwise good map in Niagara is missing two bridges.) While the breadth of material presented is considerable and most useful for intermediate-grade reports, researchers as young as second or third grade will find these titles helpful due to the clarity of writing.-Steve Clancy, Colonial Village Elementary School, Niagara Falls, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
