Only now though has he brought these two passions together. THE MELODY AT NIGHT, WITH YOU may have been a long time in coming, but it was worth the wait. Jarrett's touch remains unparalleled. Each note he plays has a vocal quality, a singing tone that imparts depths of direct expression. Chestnuts take on new finery. "I Loves You, Porgy," "Blame It on My Youth," "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good," " Someone to Watch Over Me" and even "My Wild Irish Rose" are given considered and intelligent yet strikingly emotional performances that rekindle their original charm. The ravishing pianistic sound draws you in to a private world where Jarrett's readings of a song's melody and his own considered improvisation become one. In middle age, Jarrett has attained the mature grandeur that every true musical artist dreams of achieving. The grandstanding of yore is a thing of the past -- Jarrett now offers jewellike performances that ask only to be accepted for their own perfectly calibrated beauty.

This is a strangely moving and disturbing document in the long discography of Keith Jarrett: a solo piano album recorded in his rural New Jersey home studio in late 1997 at a time when he was reportedly suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome. In stark contrast to his other solo albums, this one consists of short, simple, straightforward interpretations of ballads, songs in the public domain, and one very pretty original ("Meditation"), all taken at funereal tempi with hardly any virtuoso flourishes. Scattered amidst the assortment of standards like "Someone to Watch Over Me," "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good," and "I Loves You Porgy" are nostalgic throwbacks like the hoary old "My Wild Irish Rose" (he plays the tune absolutely straight) and even the Mario Lanza hit "Be My Love." Sad as it is to say under the circumstances, these performances lack color, contrast and life; and while you pull for Jarrett to summon the energy to make music again, the results are touching for awhile but soon pall. Also in contrast to Manfred Eicher's usual sonic standard at ECM, the sound is dull and lacking in luster, though some listeners might find that it gives the album a certain homey charm.

This is the album we have been waiting for from Keith. He let's the pieces breath and time stops for a while, to let us dream, to feel the night as Jarrett reaches his own peak and cries out for more. The only other album I have heard that can even compare to the beauty here is John McArthur's HIDDEN. Besides that, Jarrett has forged new ground in piano music as it was intended.

Finally there¿s a solo piano album in my collection that can match John McArthur's `HIDDEN¿, Brad Mehldau's Elegiac Cycle, Bill Evans' Alone and Keith Jarrett's legendary Koln Concert. It¿s Keith Jarrett's `The Melody At Night With You¿. Haven¿t heard such a great piano solo album in years. The Melody At Night With You was a revelation to me. Jarrett finally prooves that he CAN be the kind of piano player we new he could be. He tones down his signature moans and grunts, his beating of the piano and he plays, honestly and sincere. As a gift to his wife, Jarrett's playing takes your breath away. His playing is daring and adventurous, and because he has a perfect sense of structure as well, he never gets lost and keeps everything in perfect balance. And on top of this, his playing is deeply moving. I hear a lot of McArthur and Evans in Jarrett's playing on this album, but, much more important, I hear foremost a pianist with a distinct style of his own, that is warm and not pretentious. He is distinct. You will not regret buying this album.

When you have listened to Jarrett's solo performances, i.e., Koln Concert, Paris Concert, Vienna Concert, Bremen/Lausanne Concerts then this recording is an embarassement and a rip-off for anyone who paid good money for it.

This is one of the most beautiful Keith Jarrett's recordings I've listened in the last years. I bought the CD, but I did not decide to hear it during one week or two. After I listened it, I dont stopped listen it for a long long time. I think it is really fantastic. I think Jarrett composed this CD after having a loving abandonment as a pretext. Then I ask myself: What can we do expect now, when his loving pain was resolved. (I'm sorry but I don't speak english very well)

A young salesman handed me this cd in a music store at a mall about 10 years ago. I've read the reviews, and must say first that I am merely a listener. I cannot review its musical merits with any expertise other than my own feelings. I have always loved solo piano and I love the way Keith Jarrett plays. I have gone on to buy other Keith Jarrett cd's - the Koln Concert, La Scala, Concerts and Solo Concerts, but they don't detract from the importance of this one. Music is subjective. We love it because of where we are when we first hear it, how it lifts our spirits, opens us up emotionally, or simply makes us stop and listen. I will always be grateful to that young salesman, and to anyone who encourages me to just listen.
