Meet the Author

EUGENE H. PETERSON is a writer, poet, and retired pastor. He has authored more than thirty-four books (not including The Message). He is Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eugene also founded Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland, where he ministered for twenty-nine years. After teaching at a seminary, he created The Message, a vibrant Bible paraphrase that connects with today's readers like no other.

It took Peterson ten years to complete. He worked not from any English text but from the original Hebrew and Greek texts to guarantee authenticity. At the same time, his ear was always tuned to the cadence and energy of the English spoken every day on the streets. He lives with his wife, Jan, in Montana.

This edition is excellent for giving new life and vibrance to the Scriptures. It gives a clearer picture for some of the more 'wordy' passages. It makes the Bible easier to understand by using our vernacular. Wonderful tool!

Difficult to rate a Bible the same as other books. Small enough to carry in my purse; readable print. Don't like that there are no numbers to the verses.

This is one of three versions I've purchased from Barnes & Noble. I used this one as my portable, everyday, carry-with-me, pocket New Testament. It is lightweight, easy to take along and a great buy for less than $7.

This is a totally new take on the bible. It is an easy read, but a very thought provoking read. This is Jesus as if He were speaking to us today. The only concern I had was the Lord's prayer. It was very different than what I thought it would be.

I enjoy keeping this sweet little book in my purse, and pull it out for inspiration and comfort throughout my day. It's also a wonderful addition to my weekly bible study.

This really made the bible clear to me. For the first time I could read it with ease and really absorb the meaning. Highly recommended for anyone who struggles with reading ordinary bibles.

For various reasons, my outlook on Scripture had become jaded--almost as if the various translations were just so many brands of cola. All essentially the same, and consumers could buy according to their personal taste. Reading THE MESSAGE was unlike any other translation in my life. (It's the uncola UnBible.) Fresh, exciting, crisp, fast-moving. It seemed I was reading the New Testament for the first time--quite a sensation considering the many years I have studied and taught from more traditional translations. This is the ideal translation for those who, like myself, have become so familiar with Scripture that they begin to take it for granted. THE MESSAGE is also perfect for anyone who has been turned off or intimidated by the King James Version. The best way to describe it is that it's like finding personal letters in an old attic. They are nothing less than compelling! THE MESSAGE is a book I highly recommend to people of all faiths and interest levels, but only if they want to read something that is both energized and energizing.

From a majority vote, this 'version' really has God all over it. The way that Mr. Peterson articulates the concepts of the scriptures, brings to light a wide array of personal application and God's 'personal' view as to the actual way He had intended our lives and interpersonal relations to be. Taken that this is a version and not a word for word translation, will simply open your eyes when read in light of the King James or New King James. Especially if you are struggling with a certain passage or verse, read the Message and your comprehension as well as your understanding will simply unfold to His basic truth; that Jesus came down here to shed the reality and truth of REAL living upon this world with His Love, for us all.

This is probably the most inspiring and relevant Bible I have ever read. It speaks to me in contemporary language that makes sense.

The Message is a wonderful translation/interpretation of the Bible. It makes the Bible much easier to read and relate to. The Message is now my preferred version of the Bible.
