This is an exciting new to me translation

I have not been a fan of this type of Bible translation but found this one to be so very good. It speaks to me in language of today making the message very clear. I highly reccomend it to Bible students and the average reader. I used it in presenting a Bible Study to a group I belong to and found it very effective. I am sure some of the members went out and bought a copy. JOANNE

    Blasphemous!!!!!!!!!!

This "bible" is absolutely ridiculous! It is an insult to God and dangerous for the soul! It uses slang language and casual terms, such as "going to Smart Mouth College" and traveling on "Skid Row." Sounds more like a couple of teenage punks gossiping about someone than the Holy Word of God. This thing should not be published, much less sold, as anything but an example of misleading religious lies.

If you want to read God's true inspired Word, try a Douay-Rheims Bible instead. Don't let Peterson's watered down "Message" and street talk direct your spiritual journey.

    A Wonderful Paraphrase

The Message is not a translation, but rather a paraphrase taken directly from interpretation of the original languages. I find it useful in much the same as a commentary. For example, when reading a passage from Romans where translation results in a difficult sentence structure, the Message offers an interpretation of text delivered in a clearer way. I also find that reading extremely familiar passages in what is sometimes a shockingly different form provides an opportunity to consider the text in a new way. If you are looking for a translation, buy an NRSV. If you are looking for a compliment to a translations and a new way to hear familiar texts, I recommend The Message.

    A Depressingly Poor Translation

While it is very simple to read for many, the addition of the writer's own perceptions confuses and detracts from the actual intent and purpose of the original text. For example, in John 4 when the Samaritan woman leaves her water pot at the well, this translation makes the assumption that it's because she was confused and hurt by the apostle's unspoken reaction to the fact that Jesus was talking to her, whereas no other translation makes any such connotation. In reality it is more likely - based on the verses leading up to this point - that she was just no longer thirsty for the water of that well and at that point was more focused on bringing others to see the Christ.

Overall sure, this is a very *readable* book. But for anyone seeking real truths, not just assumptions and guesses by an individual who clearly has no concept of the true goal of the Gospel and God's intention, there are so many better options.
